Mark, Bud, If you are trying to install and run DOS Fractint Ver 20.04 in Windows 10, that's not going to work as is. You have a few options to run DOS Fractint or a Windows-compatible Fractint-type program in Windows 10: Run DOS Fractint "wrapped" in other software environments compatible with Windows 10 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------- - Install a virtual environment in Windows 10 -- like Oracle's free VirtualBox; then Install Windows XP in your virtual machine; then install DOS Fractint in Win XP. - You could also try running DOS Fractint in a version of DOSBox (running in Windows 10.) Quite a few people like this combination. Tim Wegner recommends the DOSBox Daum version of DOSBox. Windows-compatible Fractint-type programs ----------------------------------------------------------- - You could try Richard's Windows 10 version of Fractint, now called: "Iterated Dynamics" (although he states that it's not for general distribution). It has some features that have not been fully developed. I've used it a tremendous amount -- with a few work-arounds - I also don't use all of its features. Its interface is effectively DOS Fractint's. - You could try Jonathan Osuch's FractSDL Windows version of Fractint, which is also "still in development." It is a very serviceable version -- also with an interface that's essentially DOS Fractint's. Running DOS Fractint in a DOSBox or under Windows XP in VirtualBox give you the original Fractint. I have links and some info on the above options. - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint <fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of mchris@value.net - Webmail Sent: Friday, March 1, 2019 3:36 PM To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Fractint] FRACTINT Not quite sure how to install this. I don't use Windows. My fave fractal generators are still DOS Fractint (works fine under DOSBox (or FreeDOS/OpenDOS under VirtualBox) and the native Linux version of Fractint, Xfractint. Xfractint lacks some of DOS Fractint's features (like color cycling) because it's working through Linux XWindows graphics system instead of directly with the video hardware. There are others for Linux, Kaos comes to mind, but they don't use Fractint files. Since I don't make money from fractals, I'm not spending money to make them. But there are commercial products like Ultrafractal (Windows). I don't know if it can import or work with Fractint formulas. It does support 24-bit color and layering, so its images can make Fractint's look a bit "dated". I've never looked for any Android fractal apps, but I'm sure they exist. Mark, a commercial (!) Windows-native fractal generator working with Fractint files is, of course, Ultra Fractal. Latest version is 6.02. According to the manual, some exceptions notwithstanding, the UF "formula compiler is largely compatible with Fractint's parser and most Fractint formulas can be used without modification". Run DOS Fractint "wrapped" in other software environments compatible with Windows 10 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------- - Install a virtual environment in Windows 10 -- like Oracle's free VirtualBox; then Install Windows XP in your virtual machine; then install DOS Fractint in Win XP.

While I'm here, does anyone know of a Windows-native fractal generator that works with Fractint files? Any recommendations for favorite fractal generators? I've been out of the loop (pun intended) for 15 years.

David, You'll have to check with Hans. I don't have Ultra Fractal. I thought the annual license fee was too high back in the day, probably higher now. I have never bought into that model of software ownership anyway. I figure you should buy it once and that's it, unless you want to pay for an upgrade. ----- Original Message ----- From: "david" <gnome@hawaii.rr.com> To: "Fractint and General Fractals Discussion" <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, March 2, 2019 5:42:21 PM Subject: Re: [Fractint] Windows-native fractal generator working with Fractint files Mark - does it support the multifractal formula? I checked their site, the prices rang from US$15 up to US$99. Plus, for me, the exorbitant cost of Windows. Have no idea if it's an annual fee or not. I asked about the multifractal formula because it seems to be a real tough one to handle. On March 2, 2019 3:56:22 PM HST, "mchris@value.net - Webmail" <mchris@value.net> wrote:

Hal, I downloaded winfract-20.04p14. It doesn't appear to have an installation script. Thanks for the recommendations! Does Richard's program use Fractint FRM, PAR, and MAP files? What sparked me to finally jump back in was that I decided to make some new Smart Phone wallpapers, and the maximum size of my images (last working in 2004) was 800x600 - hardly up to the size I would like. Bud, - I failed to mention winfract-20.04p14 because I'm not familiar with it. Can anyone characterize its capabilities for Bud? <==<< - Richard's native Windows program *does* use Fractint FRM, PAR, and MAP files. You have some nice images at your link! Doing a search on: "winfract-20.04p14" (WITH the quotes) I found this Microsoft Answers page mentioning trying an install using Compatability Mode: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/ how-to-install-winfract-2004p14-on-windows-10/0300918c-e95a-4819-a83b-b2f00e 805d99 In case that link is corrupted by any email software, here is a shortened version of it: https://tinyurl.com/Winfract-20-04p14-CompMode winfract-20.04p14 was almost certainly written for an earlier version of Windows. Windows 10 has a feature called Compatability Mode, which might allow the winfract-20.04p14 installer -- and the installed program -- to run. I found detailed Compatability Mode instructions here: https://www.windows10forums.com/articles/compatibility-mode.7/ - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint <fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of mchris@value.net - Webmail Sent: Friday, March 1, 2019 7:29 PM To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Fractint] Running FRACTINT in Windows 10 Hal, I downloaded winfract-20.04p14.
