...under Windows 7 in XP compatibility mode, if I set
"tools->disable integration features", running the DOS
fractint shows nothing, but after pressing F3, a fractal
is indeed generated.
I can get both images & text to appear in Win XP's DOS mode,
but apparently my video card only does one VESA graphics mode,
640 x 480 -- as well as the needed text mode.  I then set "High"
Idle Sensitivity on the shortcut and use <alt>Enter to switch
back and forth between full screen and windowed Fractint.

I can only make this switch without disrupting Fractint if the
program is in text mode, so I can't leave an image calculating
in a window while I (say) read email.  To get around this, I
first "locate" my fractal in my one working video mode & then
calculate it in Disk Video mode -- which keeps Fractint in
text mode.

Fractint's intense CPU usage leaves a very sluggish computer,
though.

Hard to use, though, without any text screens showing.
I hope the problem is not your graphics card not implementing
the needed DOS text mode...
Can you run another text only DOS program to see if your
problem of no DOS Fractint text is reproducible in another
DOS program?

Can Chkdsk still be run at boot time in DOS mode in Win7 or is
"DOS mode" gone -- and not available to test your graphics
card's being able to enter a DOS text mode?

BIOS Setup routines have, in the past at least, likely used
DOS text mode.  What are they using these days?

Are there docs available describing the video modes available on
your graphics card?

It's my understanding that it's primarily the video card/chip
companies no longer implementing many DOS modes in graphics cards
being the problem with getting DOS Fractint to run on recent
computers...

Hmmm, might be possible to run a PAR file from the command
line.
That sounds like a possibly workable scenario.

Of course Rich's windows version does work nunder Windows 7
(albeit without mouse support).
I've found that I can move the cursor around (when in Palette
Editing mode: "e") using <ctrl> and arrow keys, but this really
isn't as convenient as using a mouse.

When using Rich's Fractint for Windows beta 5 to render Jim's FOTD,
I have found a couple of items that give me a problem, only one of
which I can overcome.

The X dimension of every fractal calculated from Jim's parameter
files is stretched too wide.  By trial & error I found that
reducing the X Magnification Factor by a factor of 0.75 (z, F6),
can reproduce the aspect ratio of the same image calculated by
DOS Fractint.

Another problem (that I've *not* been able to overcome) is that
the program always creates a single color image for any fractal
that uses the MandelbrotBC3 formula.  Amazingly, the almost
identical MandelbrotBC1 and MandelbrotBC2 formulas produce correct
images.  This fact may be of some help in locating the source
of the problem.

The examples of Jim's FOTD that I used to discover this behavior
are listed below my signature.

Also, images created using the rotation of the zoom box behave
in a different way than the DOS zoom box.  This may, in part
at least, be related to the different X Magnification Factor
factor of 0.75 .

Jim's FOTD for Dec. 4th, 2010 (a "native" Fractint Julia fractal)
rendered in Fractint for Windows beta 5 also doesn't quite match
the one created by DOS Fractint.  I pasted a copy of Jim's PAR
file for this fractal at the end of this email.

The formula behind the image is a very simple one --
Z^2.003+C, made more interesting by displaying the part of
the infinite fractal that lies 1029 turns up  the logarithmic
hyperspiral.   At this lofty height, the parent fractal
resembles the Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees, so that
the split along the  negative X-axis cuts the East Valley
area, which at the same time begins to broaden.

Today's harmless little scene appears in the
Z^sqrt(sqrt(2))+C Mandeloid as it appears 59 levels up the
complex logarithmic ladder.   (The logarithmic  ladder is
explained below.)

The 'complex logarithmic ladder' is a phrase I invented.
I sometimes refer to the same thing by the name 'logarithmic
hyperspiral'.   Neither phrase will  be found on the
internet.   I invented the phrases because the complex
logarithmic function is multi-valued, and can have an
infinity of solutions.   Each  solution gives a unique
four-dimensional Julibrot fractal, complete with both
Mandelbrot and Julia slices.   In my mind, I simply
stacked these  four-dimensional fractals onto one
another until they formed a single many-layered
hyper-object of 5 or so dimensions.   It is the stack of
all the Julibrot  fractals possible to create with a
single exponent of Z that I call the logarithmic
ladder.   Today's parent fractal for example exists on the
59th level of  this ladder.   The ladder could perhaps be
more conveniently thought of as the 59th floor of an
infinitely tall skyscraper.

In the MandelbrotBC2 formula, the p1 parameter determines
the exponent of Z, while the p2 parameter determines the
level of the ladder we wish to explore.

Today's image is a scene on the infinitely fractured main
negative stem of the Z^(2.001)+C Mandeloid as it appears
at ground level of the logarithmic ladder  when no function
is applied.   The precise location is in the East Valley of
the large minibrot on this fractured stem.

I have done very little with virtual machines. Just for my education
I might try installing DOS or Windows XP itself under Virtual PC, or
maybe VirtualBox.

Guess what, I tried Winfract (Jonathan's 16 bit version), and it does
work, apparently just fine, on Windows 7 64 bit in XP compatability
mode! This time the "enable integration features" setting didn't
matter. Even the mouse works ...
