I have now installed the programme on my windows PC and have it all working fine except that I would like it not to take up the whole screen. I've looked all through the file list and cannot see a .bat or anything else where I might change the setting.
FractInt is a very old DOS program, and was only designed to have the "display window" for it's images to be at full-screen. You could try right-clicking the actual executable module to modify the Properties, but I believe it would only cause the program to give a warning message about it not being able to run in anything but a "Normal Window", as opposed to a "Minimized" way.
The only other option is to use the "Disk-Video" modes to write directly to disk and not even use a video adapter at all. (See the documentation that is generated when running FRACTINT.EXE -DOC from the command line. The basic info may be found somewhere around page 157, section 6.2.)
I am interested in making an .avi file, thence a dv film, from the colour cycling to use as an effect in a play. Does anyone know if this can be done. I have tried the windows version of fractint but the colour scrolling doesn't work. I am aware that Fractal Explorer has an .avi making mode and will use this if I have to but it is the colour cycling that I really wanted.
First off, the Windows version does work when you use the latest copy of WinFract, which may be found at this location: http://www.Nahee.com/Software/

Thank you for this information, I now have the latest version and colour-cycling. I now have to fathom a way of saving that to .avi but I'll have a go and if I suceed I'll post a solution.
