FOTD 23-02-10 (Dissolution [6])
FOTD -- February 23, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With today's image we return to the MandAutoCritInZ formula, a formula that often but not always initializes 'Z' to a critical value, and is without doubt the most productive formula in FOTD history. Today's iterated expression is (Z^2)+2(Z^0.9)+C, which produces a fractal that resembles nothing as much as a half-dissolved Mandelbrot set. The name "Dissolution" refers back to this unseen parent fractal. Today's scene is located on the shattered remnants of the once- mighty negative stem, not too far east of the once-prominent large minibrot, but far enough that most of the typical East Valley stuff has disappeared. The few remnants that do remain add a modicum of interest to the central minibrot. The rating of a 6 is what I think the image is worth. The rating is held down by the coloring, which could use a bit more work. As it is, I had too little time to devote to bringing out the scene's full potential. The calculation time of just under 3 minutes will pass in a slow flash for those running the included parameter file. The trip to view the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> will pass in a fast flash. Clouds moved in overnight Sunday here at Fractal Central, lead- ing to a cloudy day Monday with a temperature of 41F +5C and a few spurts of tapioca snow (graupel). The fractal cats took the whole thing in stride, dividing their time between the heat and their window shelf. My day was boringly busy. It was reported on the list that the FOTD images were quite suc- cessful when I created them with the formulas hard coded in the Fractint program. I'm not sure I totally agree, but who knows -- maybe I'll have another go at those surprisingly simple yet productive formulas. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and listen close to today's music if you want to know what's wrong with the world.
