FOTD 13-11-03 (Mandelbrot-02 [6])
FOTD -- November 13, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's trip into the Mandelbrot set takes us to East Valley, which is sometimes known as Elephant Valley. The elephants do not appear in today's image however. Instead, the place we visit is the north shore of the valley and the 'star' at the tip of a filament extending from a bud with a periodicity of 24. The scene of today's image lies on a filament of the 'star'. The midget at the center of the image is surrounded by 8 groups of 24 radiating filaments, making 192 filaments in all that lead beyond the frame. This multitude of filaments blends the otherwise jagged iteration bands into a smooth color gradient that is not at all justified by the palette color itself. Naming the image was no problem. Since it is the second in the series of scenes in the Mandelbrot set, I named it "Mandelbrot- 02". Rating it was an equally simple task. The picture is just a little above average -- a perfect candidate for a rating of 6. I avoided the use of arbitrary precision math, thereby enabling the image to render in 3 minutes, at least on my antiquated 200mhz 80586 (P-200) unit. Since the magnitude of the image is close to the range where arbitrary precision math kicks in, I included the mathtolerance=/1 command in the parameter file. This prevents the program from shifting to arbitrary precision math and avoids unpleasant surprises, such as two-hour render times, when the image is calculated at resolutions higher than 640x480. All rendering problems may be avoided however by downloading the finished GIF image from either Paul's FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> Heavy clouds and rain kept the fractal cats indoors all day Wednesday. The temperature reached 55F 13C, but the duo had no chance to test it. This morning is starting with lots of clouds but some sun. The winds are high however, and this will again put a damper on the cats' outdoor activity. Fractal cats dislike strong winds. I have about 4 hours work to finish before I will have a chance to look into the M-set. What I find there will be tomorrow's FOTD. Until then, take care, and be happy in your fun.
