Re: [Fractint] FractInt under Windows XP Pro

I have been trying to get Fractint to work on Windows XP with no luck so far. My video card is a Dell OEM with the ATI Radeon chip. I am using the ATI generic 'reference' drivers. I am not using the Dell drivers because they don't support 1152x864. Windows XP also has built-in drivers for this chip, but I don't use them because they cause my PC to not wake up from standby mode. I have a DOS program called vgatest.exe and if I run it in a full screen DOS session, it displays all the VESA 256 color modes OK. I have fractint set to come up in 320x200x256 mode, which it does, but when I hit the Del key and pick an Auto-detect VESA mode, it starts to draw the fractal then locks the PC up. I have to do a cold boot. When it starts to draw the fractal, it looks like it is still in 320x200x256 mode. I have tried a few things but it is difficult to experiment since the PC locks up each time. I tried various Compatibility modes to no avail (but these seem to be for earlier Windows versions, not DOS). I am using the latest 20.0 official release. Does anyone think the latest developer's release would be different? Tim, if you are listening, do you have any idea why vgatest.exe would work, but not fractint? On another note, has anybody tried Virtual PC? It supposedly allows any DOS SVGA program up 1600x1200x256 to run (it emulates an S3 chip using DirectX). I have read several reviews saying that it works great but haven't heard of anyone running fractint on it. Virtual PC is $200, but you can get a free, full featured 45 day trial from their website: http://www.connectix.com Any further information would be greatly appreciated. Nick

Not having XP installed where I can easily test your siteuation, I am afraid I will not be of mush help at the moment. But I purposefully listed the name and email address of the individual with which the posting was about. Steven said that he would attempt to assist anyone that wished to contact him off-list.

I would definitely suggest going to the following and downloading version 20.2.04, especially since it has been almost three years (and twenty-eight or so releases) since your last copy. http://www.fractint.org/ Sincerely, P.N.L. -------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.fractalus.com/cgi-bin/theway?ring=fractals&id=43&go
