Re: [Fractint] hu ho, expired cert ?
RE fractint.org cert Ah, what a fine bunch of sharp-eyed fractint loyalists! :-) This is a bit off topic, but since list traffic is low, and several of you have expressed interest, here goes. The short explanation is that in my copious hours as a happy retired person I have numerous projects queued up, and some times unconscionable lengths of time go by between tactics. Too many rocking chairs to rock back and forth in and nap in, and so little time! https://fractint.net is the main fractint site, and the cert there is fine. fractint.net is hosted on a VPS (Virtual Private Server) that is managed by Dreamhost. For various reasons (control and to save a few bucks) I have been experimenting with migrating all my sites from the Dreamhost VPS to DreamCompute, which is an unmanaged service that allows one to spawn virtual machines that you configure yourself. fractint.org used to be a mirror of fractint.net, but I copied it to my DreamCompute instance. Various international trips (and the afore-mentioned quality time in rocking chairs) delayed my efforts. This is actually not hard to finish, I should bestir myself to do it. As one of you noticed, I am also migrating from the Apache web server to Nginx. The holdup on my end has more to do with some other sites I am hosting than fractint.org. One of them is a Wordpress site, which is a bit more complex. Fractint.net/org, on the other hand, is just static html with almost no complications. There was a learning curve involved in using DreamCompute. Since it is unmanaged, it's like putting Linux on your own box and installing and configuring everything yourself. No help of any kind. I have more or less learned what I need to know, though making an attempt to lock things down and have a reasonably secure setup is a challenge. I haven't done anything on this project since January. Joking about rocking chairs aside, my life is very full with a lot going on. My reason for working on web hosting is that I figure doing technical work keeps the brain going. That remains to be seen. There's really no excuse for me to have left fractint.org hanging in limbo, so without making any promises, I'll have a look and see what it takes to have fractint.org go live again. When done it will be a true mirror (a copy) of fractint.net, and not just a redirect to the same site. Tim
The mirror https://fractint.org should work now. The letsencrypt certificate expired last January and had to be renewed. I need to write a script to do it automatically. There's plenty more to do on my rehosting project, but that immediate issue is remedied for the next few months. The problem with working so intermittently at my age is it takes a while to remember how things work! Hmmm, maybe that was a problem when I was younger too!
