FOTD 22-04-11 (Composition-101 [No Rating])
FOTD -- April 22, 2011 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is strange indeed. It holds no fine detail, consisting totally of a smooth blending of colors, as smooth, that is, as can be achieved with the 256 colors of the GIF format. And unlike recent images, today's appears much the same at all resolutions including the lowly 640x480. I named the image "Composition-101". Composition is one of the basic things that makes a picture a work of art, and one of the first things taught in art courses is that the 1/3-1/3 points of a frame are powerful places to place the center of interest of a picture. I have placed the obvious center of interest of today's image 1/3 of the distance down from the top and 1/3 of the way across from the left -- just where the art instructor would approve. With next to no detail to latch onto, I could not give a rating to today's image, which creates more of an intuitive feeling than a visual impression. The color palette was largely borrowed from one of Albrecht's images, with only a slight tweaking of a few registers to add as much smoothness as possible. I suspect that the variation between color monitors will probably undo much of the tweaking however. The calculation time of under 3-1/2 minutes is borderline slow. This slight inconvenience may be avoided by viewing the already- calculated image at a resolution of 640x480 on the official but unfinished FOTD web site at: <http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html> The image may be seen in high definition on Hal's web site at> <http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html> But with today's image, little improvement will be noticeable. Paul's web site is still up at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> though it is about 5 months behind. I read recently on the list that the four greatest achievements of man are: the invention of Calculus, the theory of relativity, the theory of quantum mechanics, and the discovery of fractals. Each of these things has vastly changed the way we look at the reality of the world we live in, and in some cases has questioned the actual truth of the concept of reality itself. In upcoming FOTD's I will discuss some of my ideas about these topics. But don't expect my (crackpot?) ideas to agree with the conventional rational scientific doctrine. Lots of sun, a brisk wind and a chilly temperature of 59F 15C made Thursday an acceptable day here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats spent the day watching for the aggressive tomcat that sprayed their front door on Wednesday. Luckily for the aggressive cat, he never showed up. The day of the humans was busy but reasonably under control. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and be at peace with things as they are. If it were truly current, then it would have all the images for all of the years, but apparently it does not. Missing months within years: 2010 January, February, March, April, May, June 2009 August, September, October, November, December 2007 January, February, March 2006 --- ALL MONTHS --- 2005 --- ALL MONTHS --- 2004 --- ALL MONTHS --- 2003 April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December Somebody probably should check to see how many days are missing within those months that are available to view. I know the last time I looked there were some missing days, which in my may of thinking is far from "current". As to the old web pages that I maintained for almost 14 years, I got behind when I went into the hospital after battling cancer for the past 3 years (and still am doing). Got a sever infection back in October, and was admitted for 4 weeks to get that taken care of. Then they started the chemo-therapy and radiation treatments again for the next two months, which almost killed me. Then in March they decided to do major surgery, taking out a large section of my jaw and neck, starting from just below my right ear down to my where my chest begins. They took out so much flesh and skin, that it had to be replaced with one of my chest muscles and a section of skin as big as a large man's hand. It left me without a lot of functionality on my arm, mouth, tongue, etc. And I am still in the process of healing, along with physical and speech therapy. Good grief, Paul, that medical history sounds drastic. I'm sure that all Fractalists, everywhere, will join me in wishing you such minimal discomfort as is possible in your battle. Personally I'm amazed that you've been able to keep abreast of Fractal developments. Best wishes John Wilson. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul N. Paul's site also does not have all the images for all the years. I have a background job that is processing the backlog; you can subscribe to the RSS feed to see them as they are added. The current FOTD images that Jim are posting are added to that page as soon as they are computed at 1600x1200 3x antialiased. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com/the-direct3d-graphics-pipeline/> Legalize Adulthood! <http://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com>

Oops, I responded to this before I noticed it was Paul posting :-). I think anyone is understanding of why Paul's site doesn't have every new image on it. My comments are not intended as a criticism; I am not interested in a pissing match of whose site is more "current". I am simply pointing out that if you want Jim's recent posts at 1600x1200 3x antialiased, you can get them from my web space. I made this for me and if others like it, great. If they don't, that's fine too; I still get out of it what I wanted. Along the way its turned up a bug or two in xfractint and I've coordinated with Jonathan on trying to get those identified and fixed. Hey Albrecht, How about knocking off the "gloom and doom" comments? Stick to your fantastic Fractal skills? (I was going to say something like "harbinger of doom", but I see that this is now one of those warlike games that many of us deplore). You're a youngster compared with at least a couple of us, who don't need weekly warnings that "The End is Nigh"! :-) Thanks! One of my favorite community college students was 70 and starting his 3rd career. He'd already retired from military service, then went into civil service and retired from that, and was starting his career writing music for ads and movie soundtracks. A 92-year-old woman ran the Honolulu Marathon. Again. Grandma Moses started painting in her 70s and produced over 3600 canvases over 3 decades.
