JackOTradez: I greatly admire all your animation work and hope soon to be creating such works using your excellent utilities. I think that you're being a little harsh on those of us who have an "artistic" connection with Fractint as if there is something wrong with that. I have two fractal art shows opening in November, and another opening in January, as well as several others scheduled for 2003, and 2004. I produce computer generated art that ranges from small postcard size all the way up to large murals. My work has been called many things by my collectors and critics alike, but my art has never been called "pretty pictures". Fractint is an essential part of my cybernetic "paintbox" which I use to produce my different images. I will continue to use Fractint for as long as there are computers, operating systems, and printers that can support it. Notwithstanding, the main reason I use Fractint rather is because it is fun. As a practicing professional artist who lives by the sale of his work, I must assert that my "use" of Fractint is every bit as legitimate as those who don't use fractint in that way. Saying that using Fractint as a mathematical tool is a "purer" or "better" use than using Fractint as an artistic tool is unfair. Blaming, finger-pointing, and name-calling the thousands of former Fractint users who are artists for leaving Fractint because they found other more useful tools elsewhere; is not helpful, and frankly doesn't solve the problem at hand. If the truth be told, I don't think that all many of the current Fractint users could actually call themselves mathematicians, or physicists, etc.., even though IMHO that career or vocation is just as legitimate career path and use of Fractint as any other. I would even suspect that most mathematicians and other similarly inclined folk use Fractint for the same reason as I do. Fractint is fun! I would hazard a guess that the majority of Fractint users also enjoy Fractint simply because it is fun. My suggestions and comments about upgrading and extending Fractint's functionality, usefulness, and life-span, is expressed with the main intention of increasing the FUN in using Fractint. I have purchased and registered several of those "other" new windoze-based fractal programs. They are good; a couple of them are really good. But (unless I have missed something) none of them can zoom AS DEEP as Fractint, nor with anywhere close the max number of iterations. And Fractint still has the most options and fractal types. The other programs seem pointed towards those who just want to make pretty pictures. Fractint is (and always has been) for the serious fractal explorer. You can even write your own formulas and experiment! And it is good enuf just as it is. (I use the developers version 20+). As for DOS obsolete, I feel that anyone sophisticated enuf to use Fractint to it's max capabilities should be able to buy or obtain a cheap/second-hand pentium-2 or 3 system and install DOS on it - this will be possible for many years yet. Deadware? Not in this lifetime ... ... ...
