Anyone run DOS Fractint in CMD window in WinXP mode of Win7 Prof. 32-bit?
Has anyone tried to run DOS Fractint in the CMD window in the WinXP mode of Windows 7 Professional 32-bit or 64-bit -- and if so -- which one? Hmm, why retire it? If it still does what you need to do re Fractint? Anyway. Haven't tried DOS Fractint under any version of Windows newer than W98. The computer would freeze hard as Fractint and Windows fought over the display. On the same hardware, DOS Fractint worked just fine, even generating images minimized in the background, running under 32-bit OS/2 ... I understand that 16-bit DOS programs will not run at all under 64-bit Windows. Maybe the 32-bit version will run DOS programs? You could run a straight DOS like FreeDOS under a Virtual Machine like VirtualBox, I think that would work. Or you could run DOSBox, which is a DOS VM that includes DOS. I've run DOS Fractint under DOSBox on 32-bit Linux, the only limitation is what video support your DOSBox version supports. IIRC, someone on the list awhile back mentioned that there were versions of DOSBox that supported many more video modes than the stock VESA ones that came with the v0.74 that I have here. I run Fractint in a DOS Window on XP Win 7 supports a real version of XP running as a virtual machine on Win 7 Pro or higher and all your XP software works in this mode. This is almost the right thread . I've recently downloaded and compiled Fracint 20. on Ubuntu 13.10 ; this appears to do what you'd expect when you run xfractint from the Terminal window . When I add a new formula to the *.frm file[s] it doesn't appear in the Fractint formula browser , yes I did select formula and also tried the F6 key . Advice on this matter is appreciated .
