Paul, Thanks for your suggestions. I'll see what I can do with them. When I did a search for "Fractint" in CompuServe, I got a home page for Fractint that told me to download 20.0 as the newest version. I was pretty skeptical because I've had 20.0 since it was new. I downloaded my first Fractint well over ten years ago, but I have used it very little in recent years. I've had my XP machine for almost a year and hadn't discovered the problem until today. Those links might be of use, especially under DOS and FAT32. But considering the dates on those files, I recommend knowing the maker and model of your video card and looking around the manufacturer's site for TSRs or .SYS drivers, or perhaps a configuration utility that enables a hardware VESA bios to be visible. The search might be like this: "VESA DOS [maker] [model]", but hopefully search engines don't hav a better organization of what you want to know than your manufacturer. http://www.drivers.com/ might also be of use in the event of a defunct or foreign manufacturer or in the unlikely event of a maker with little presence on the web. (Who knows, maybe Windows is hiding your VESA bios [instead of emulating it], or you just haven't waited long enough for the screen to resynchronize, which seems to take pretty long, sometimes.)
