Richard,
Which of these features do you use on a regular basis?
None of these on a regular basis. Occasionally: L-system fractal type IFS 2D/IFS 3D fractal type Rarely: logmap=old in PAR sets read fractal type, etc., parameters from GIF and you don't have a corresponding PAR for the GIF Lee

There are improvements for these fractal types on the roadmap (interactive rotate/scale/pan, point-sprite rendering, limits imposed only by memory and not by magic values, more L-system attributes).
Rarely:
logmap=old in PAR sets
What is the effect here?
read fractal type, etc., parameters from GIF and you don't have a corresponding PAR for the GIF

There are some of Jim's FOTDs that have used this.

Just the above listed ones on a fairly "regular basis". Definitely need the "read fractal type, etc., parameters from GIF".

Wow, someone who uses the sound options! The current Windows version doesn't have sound support, but I'm looking at using this library for cross-platform sound support (Windows, *nix, Mac): <http://www.portaudio.com/>
- read fractal type, etc., parameters from GIF and you don't have a corresponding PAR for the GIF
Are these for your own GIFs where you've lost the PARs, or for other people's GIFs?
- release=/saverelease= in PAR sets, i.e. do you depend on old behavior tha t had bugs or was different for some other reason
Are you using this to insulate your pars against future changes or because you really need the old functionality? -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

For both reasons.

Again, for both reasons.
I stated the parameter name incorrectly, its reset=<version>, not release=<version>. srelease is a sound parameter and not related to changing behavior based on versions. In article <46A97A3A.9030600@Earthlink.net>, Maryetta Campbell <Maryetta.C@Earthlink.net> writes:

I agree pretty much with the above as well, except for the latter feature of "release=/saverelease=". I have so many of the older versions of the program anyway, that I can always use one of them to run with. ;-} Though I only use the "read parameters from GIF" for retrieving values from other people's images, I do understand that there are many individuals whom used FractInt (way back when) that only saved images and never bothered with the PAR files. So this feature seems to still be quite useful to me. As to the "sounds", I have a whole collection of specific PAR files which are geared to produce "music". And I occasionally run those on my Windows-98 machine. There have been many nieces, nephews, and other children that were quite amused by this feature. And I still show the younger ones this when I am doing computer tutoring. Interesting. However, so far I've heard from 4 people. I can't tell how many people are subscribed to this list. So I'll just toss out this additional question: What do you think is the size of the fractint user base today? -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

The last time I checked there were a little more than 210 on the regular list, and slightly over 50 on the digested version of the list.
So I'll just toss out this additional question: What do you think is the size of the fractint user base today?
If you are wondering about "users" that have FractInt loaded on a computer and it functions adequately, then I would say thousands of people. But this is based upon the DOS, UNIX, Windows, etc. versions that are available. Just in the past 90 days, there have been over 2,010 downloads of the last version you made available: http://www.Nahee.com/Software/FractInt_Setup_21-00_beta-5.msi Is there a particular "magic number" of users you are looking for?? I see that Paul Lee has posted a link to several music pars. Many of mine are included in the first set. I haven't been doing any recent fractint music, so I feel that what has been posted by Paul is pretty representative. Richard wrote:

Only the "Read... params from GIF". Did get deeply into the cellular automata stuff years ago but the rest - nope. Chris Only got one eye so all that 3d stuff slid past me, was it good?!

I don't use these often, BUT, they are an unparallelled teaching tool for showing someone who knows nothing of fractals or complex numbers how Fractint generates images. When I'm fiddling with Fractint at work and someone comes by and asks 'What's that?', if they show any interest after I tell them its a "fractal" and generated by math, they get the orbits window, used with the view window option so they see both the orbits and the image. Getting a visual idea of what it means for z to go to infinity (i.e. off-screen) or to say bounded conveys an understanding otherwise only gained by lots more math than a casual questioner is going to tolerate. To me, the orbit drawing modes are very important because of that teaching aspect. I'd hate to see them not make it into the future with Fractint.
- orbit sound options
Every bit of fractal sound I've ever heard has been a painful as the sound of a truck full of pigs crashing into a truck full of empty tin cans.
- L-system fractal type
Seldom use this.
- IFS 2D/IFS 3D fractal type
Seldom use.
- cellular automata fractal type
Haven't used it in years and think it unlikely I ever will again.
- random dot stereogram feature
Seldom use, but can be interesting to show off to non-fractalers who wanter by.
- red/blue glasses stereo rendering feature
Haven't used it in ages. Damn, now I'm going to have to try it out again. BTW, apropos nothing fractal, but marvellous none the less and fractal types generally love the marvellous, there are some red/green 3D images of phosphatized fossil arthropod larvae from 500,000,000 years ago, preserved in amazing detail and fully 3 dimensional (that is, unsquished) at: http://www.core-orsten-research.de/22stereo.html
- diffusion limited aggregation fractal type
Can't recall having used to the point of having no idea what this is/does.
- read fractal type, etc., parameters from GIF and you don't have a corresponding PAR for the GIF
Useful from time to time.
- release=/saverelease= in PAR sets, i.e. do you depend on old behavior that had bugs or was different for some other reason
I don't use this.
- olddemcolors= in PAR sets
Don't know what this is.
- logmap=old in PAR sets
Don't know what this is. Damn, now I'll have to try it.
- raytracing file output; if so, what raytracer?
I think I used it in the distant past with POVRay, but doubt I'd be using it again. Thanks for your efforts to give Fractint a future, Richard. Mike
