FOTD 30-12-06 (Somber Salutations [7])
FOTD -- December 30, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Deep in the dark and gloom of the land of fractals I found the fractal image for today. It certainly is one of the most somber FOTD's of all time. No wonder it earned the dreary name "Somber Salutations". The gloomy atmosphere is created by a preponder- ance of dark blues and purples, accented by drab olive green foreground features that are not much cheerier. To emphasize the somber effect, the brightness of the monitor may be turned down. The one spot of glory is at the center of the image around the compulsory midget at the center, where the colors brighten drama- tically. But this small area of cheer merely sets off the gloom- iness of the rest of the image. The parent fractal was created by subtracting Z^(1.1) from Z^(-5.5) and adding C. This parent is a huge, sprawling, distorted Mandeloid thing extending far beyond the opening screen. The Mandeloid is far out of proportion, with the period-2 bud larger than the main bay. It is also surrounded by scattered blobs, much like we see in today's image. Today's scene is located in some debris near a blob well beyond East Valley. As a rule, I am not a gloomy person, or at least I try not to be, but I rather enjoy today's dreary image, which I consider good enough to rate a 7. The passes=b option works surprisingly well with the image, and it is also the fastest, finishing in under 3 minutes. If 3 minutes is not fast enough, the image may be viewed by visiting the FOTD web site, where it is posted. The web site may be accessed at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The mild, snowless winter continues here at Fractal central. A mix of sun and clouds, with a temperature of 48F 9C, made things almost spring-like on Friday. The fractal cats passed the day finishing off the last of the gift wrappings. My day was on the slow side, which left a bit of extra time for the fractal. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and what have fractals wrought?
