Bad and Good Fractal News plus XP compatibility
The bad fractal news is that, due to a cat search, there is no FOTD for June 10 and will be none until June 12. The good fractal news is that the cat search was successful. We found two new fractal cats at the animal shelter, a three-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl. The new dynamic duo had been owned by a woman who recently died, so though one cat is a large black male and the other a small gray female, they have lived together all their lives and get along fine together. Apparently, the lady cat can take care of herself if big boy gets rowdy. We have not yet named them, since they are still familiarizing themselves with their new home. In a few days, when they feel at home, their personalities will become more apparent, and they will in effect name themselves. As a side note, I am curious as to the difficulty people are having running Fractint under XP. Maybe the incompatibil- ity exists only with the home version of XP. I use the professional version of XP, and Fractint runs under it at lightning speed, with no clumsy DOS-emulator programs that slow things down and all program features and video resolutions fully functional. Jim, What is the maximum size image you can show on the screen, and what is your video card? Is this independent of VESA modes, and if so, I wonder if you could color cycle 2048x1536 images on a monitor that uses that resolution. Rich or Paul, Anybody have any thoughts on this? Lee
the cat search was successful. We found two new fractal cats Congratulations, Jim! Fractint practitioners of a feline bent everywhere are rejoicing I am sure!
they have lived together all their lives and get along fine together. I heartily approve of your selection methodology.

My experience with Fractint under Windows is that the real key element is the Windows video driver and how well its use of the video hardware gets along with Fractint's use. -- David gnome@hawaii.rr.com authenticity, honesty, community

Can you identify the graphics card in your machine? (I have seen quite a few references to the fact that many current video cards do not correctly implement the VESA video modes and thereby cause Fractint to operate incorrectly.) Also, I'm concerned that when people write in to the Fractint and Philofractal mailing lists I see that they often refer to the operating system as the likely cause of their problems and do not mention the fact that improperly-implemented VESA video modes in their graphics card may be the cause of their problems. - Hal Lane ######################### # hallane@earthlink.net <mailto:hallane@earthlink.net> # #########################
