FOTD 21-07-08 (Six Discontinuities [4])
FOTD -- July 21, 2008 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In today's image we return once again to the Z^(1.875)+C Mandeloid as it appears 26 levels up the complex-log hyperspiral with the 'floor' function applied. This Mandeloid closely resembles the Mandelbrot set. The main differences are the lack of a main spike and the 180-degree rotation. Today's scene is located on the west side of the south branch of Seahorse Valley of the parent, which becomes the north branch when the fractal is rotated 180 degrees to the 'normal' position. I named the image "Six Discontinuities" after the six almost- invisible discontinuities that interrupt the perfection of the spiral seahorse tails leading to the central minibrot. Unfortu- nately, these breaks are an inescapable part of all fractals created with fractional powers of Z. They must always spoil the sought-after fractal perfection. I rated the image at a humble 4, which can be considered no better than barely adequate. Let's face it, the image is basically nothing more than another scene in Seahorse Valley, the first place every tyro fractalist checks. Actually, this parent Mandeloid is basically a 'ground level' one, and can be created far more simply with any formula that can calculate (-Z)^(1.875)+C, which is another reason I was so stingy with the rating. The calculation time of 7 minutes on a P4-2000mhz unit just makes things worse. But with today's super-machines that move at the speed of a tachyon, that time may be cut significantly. The unlucky few with machines that have a panic attack when they see a DOS program can find the finished image posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Very summer-like weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Sunday. The morning and first half of the afternoon were sunny, hazy, hot and humid, with a temperature of 93F 34C. But a thunder-shower moved in during the late afternoon with a wind squall and heavy rain that knocked the temperature down to 73F 23C, bringing welcome comfort to both cats and humans. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours, so be right here when that paradisiacal moment arrives. Until then, take care, and fractals are never so good that they can't get better.
