FOTD 28-01-04 (The Quintessential Midget [8])
FOTD -- January 28, 2004 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Unless I am mistaken, today's FOTD is the third consecutive one that rates an 8. Combined with the render time of 19 minutes, its overall value is 41. This unexpected spate of excellence might have been equalled sometime in the past, but at the moment, I cannot recall when. But how did this excellence come about? Surely the extra time available for fractal exploration, due to the bad weather and resulting lack of work, is largely responsible. When I saw the golden ratio mentioned on the list, having nothing else to do, I was inspired to venture into the fractals that this mysterious number can produce. Turning to the MandelbrotMix4 formula, I checked the fractal that results when 0.8 parts of Z^(1.618) are subtracted from 0.8 parts of Z^(-1.618) and (1/C) is added. This fractal is an oversized thing consisting of three main Mandeloids, the largest of which barely appears in the southwest corner of the default screen. In today's scene I ignored this giant Mandeloid, which is mostly off the screen, and turned instead to the larger of the two Mandeloids that fit entirely onto the screen. This Mandeloid appears to be in what I call a condition of stress, as though it were ready to be cut off by a too-small escape radius. But stressed as it might be, the midget still has some interesting areas to check. The area I chose is the interior of the west branch of the valley leading to the large southern bud of this midget. Hidden there, deep in a cut-off area of interest, I found the midget that appears in today's image. And what a splendid midget it is. It is so splendid in fact that I named it "The Quintessential Midget", a title that is too long to fit into the allotted space in the parameter file. Actually, the midget looks as though it could use a few more iterations. This could easily be done, but if I raised the maxiter, it would mess up the color palette, which is what really makes the image. The render time of 19 minutes is a small price to pay for such a fine example of a midget. And there is even better news -- the completed GIF image is available for download on Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Freezing drizzle prevailed all day Tuesday here at Fractal Central, making the area roads an ice-skating rink. The drizzle did not stop until it was replaced by heavy snow around sunset. With a temperature of 25F -4C, the day was a true winter wonder- land. Unfortunately, the fractal cats do not enjoy wonderlands, and passed the day indoors by the heat. I have lost track of the snow depth this morning. It appears to be around 1 foot in the U.S. measuring system, or 30cm in the rest of the world. Whatever the exact amount of snow, the dynamic duo will have another indoor day. For me, the work appears to have come to a halt, probably because everyone is snowed in. This means a good opportunity to find more great fractals. Any success I might have in Fractal Land will appear as tomorrow's FOTD. Until then, take care, and keep those fractals iterating. Does this new 20.3.00 release have another bug?? I just noticed the "time=" comment in the PAR having an incorrect value. Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/
Hi I recently had some work done on my computer and am unable to run Fractint now- I have a very knowledgeable computer consultant but he is not particulary familiar with Fractint so I was wondering if i can get some input from the list. here are the details- Since about 1999 I have had a Pentium 500 running Windows '98 which was put together by the consultant. It has a Matrox something or other card that was chosen for Fractint and I have been very happy with this system. I use Netscape rather than Microsoft Explorer and it was version 4 something, have recently been unable to access some web sites because of the old version of Netscape. I use a modem. This did not bother me much because we have a fast connection at work and if I needed to find something I could do it at work. I did want to be able to listen to streaming audio and download MP3's which I was not able to do but other than that was happy. I would not have changed anything except there started to be a smell and I thought the fan had broken- it was intermittent, turned out to be the power cord burning and it was replaced. Meanwhile, they upgraded Netscape and installed some virus software and other stuff and now I cannot run Fractint. I had version 18.6 in a file with about 2000 formulas, gifs, unrelated stuff. It would draw the default mandelbrot and then the computer would freeze, Ctrl-alt- delete would not work and it needed to be unplugged. I downloaded the newest version of Fractint into a separate file and it worked once but could not access the other files. I backed up those files onto a CD (and as i came back into the room where the computer was not in its usual place, tripped over the open CD drawer and broke it.) Then I decided to download the new Fractint into the old file, thinking the program was corrupted in some way. It did not work and froze the computer. Then I tried the other version in the new file and it also does not work reliably but sometimes works- it seems to depend somewhat on what video mode I choose but mostly freezes the computer. I suspect something in the new software is interfering- is this likely?- I'll list the new software below. While the computer was being fixed I had decided to get a new laptop to take to work and to connect to the T1 line and to do new stuff on, and to keep this computer to run Fractint and some older DOS programs etc., so I would be happy to go back to the old situation if I knew what the problem was. (BTW I selected a beautiful light IBM think pad, their customer service and technical support has been superb, they answer the phone in 90 sec and know who you are, unfortunately the laptop died midway through set-up and they are replacing it no questions asked, so you can imagine I'm a little frustrated.) Here's a list of the new software: Netscape 7.1 real Player latest free version WinAmp Ad-aware6.0 Norton antivirus 2003 Live!ware new Windows Media Player Anyone have any ideas??? Thanks so much- Kathy Roth

Personally, I would say as soon as you get your laptop back, and it is in good working condition, just back up the files you want to keep and then reformat the whole drive and reload Win-98 as if it were a new system. Sometimes starting from scratch is much better, and you only have to install those few programs you actually will need. This will leave you with a much cleaner system than one that has had several programs and applications installed and removed over the years. They're a good bet for interference, but I can't rule out hardware problems considering what els your computer has suffered. The version of Fractint that you're using is for Windows, correct? That wasn't clear, but given your 18.6 version, that's what I expect. You should be able to re-start Windows in DOS mode. Sorry if that's an inconvenience, but it works for me and this more-crappy-than- usual Mandrake release (plus I'm running a Windows version that occasionally doesn't ask if CTRL-ALT-DEL means "boot this house of cards", and that exits to DOS). I _know_ that DOS has exclusivity on the processor when Windows isn't loaded. When you're spending four hours jenerating a hard-copy resolution (that still _should_ be reduced to five colours), then that's the important thing for me.
