FOTD 05-07-07 (A Fractal Basin [5])
FOTD -- July 05, 2007 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due mostly to my laziness, the FOTD image is 2 hours late. But it's no problem. The FOTD for July 06 will appear on schedule in around 22 hours. The parent fractal of today's image is an un-spectacular thing that results when an unlikely but very critical amount of Z^4, (that amount is 0.4699315), is subtracted from Z^3. This parent appears as a Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees, with a huge open triangular-shaped area beyond East, or in this case, West Valley. Today's scene is located in some extra decorations that lie on the main (in this case the positive) stem of the parent. The trip back out to the parent fractal is quite interesting, but with an image maxiter of 15000, it is rather slow. I rated the image at a 5 and named it "A Fractal Basin", which was the only thing I could think of at the time. The image calculates in under 6 minutes on the fast P2000 machine. It would take around 1/2 hour on the worn-out P200 machine. The fastest and easiest way to see the image is to pay a visit to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and view it there. But before visiting the site, give Paul a bit of time to calculate and post it. The weather here at Fractal Central on Wednesday left much to be desired. The clouds hung heavy all day, while occasional showers of rain wet the pavement and dampened the local fire- works displays scheduled for this evening. The temperature of 73F 23C was not quite warm enough for comfortable summer outdoor activities, and last and perhaps least, the continuing random firecracker explosions kept the fractal cats skittish. All this made for a less-than-ideal holiday, but fractals never take a holiday, and the next one will be along in a brief 22 hours. Until then, take care, and when things are going wrong, cheer up with an infinite fractal. They give endless fun.
