Linux DOSEMU or BOCHS able to run DOS Fractint?
Just wondering if anyone's tried running DOS Fractint under Linux DOS Emulator (DOSEMU) or the BOCHS virtual x86 software? I'm moving to Linux, and XFractint isn't cooperating yet in basic ways (see other note about XFractint and SSTOOLS.INI). David gnome@hawaii.rr.com

I have DOSEMU set up to run Fractint and it works just fine. Jonathan

Hurrah - thank you! I've not done anything with DOSEMU yet, so how do you set it up to run Fractint? What kinds of resolutions does it support? David gnome@hawaii.rr.com

I don't recall doing anything special. I'll check into it. The hardest part was probably figuring out how to set up the directories. I don't have sound other than from the PC speaker, but that has been the case for years even under Windows. Something about Sound Blaster emulation doesn't agree with Fractint. I can get up to 1024x768, which is too big to fit on the screen, but works anyway. Jonathan

Looks like time I started learning about DOSEMU.

On three different machines, two different OSes, with two different sound cards, I've never gotten any sound from Fractint except speaker beeps. Doesn't upset me.

1024x768 too big to fit on the screen? That's the resolution I usually use. David gnome@hawaii.rr.com

Me too. But, there is a window around it (ie. borders). So, it doesn't quite fit the screen. Something else to remember is that due to the emulation, Fractint will run slower under DOSEMU. I have also tried DOSBOX, but it crashes immediately when I start Fractint. It's probably a graphics mode/card problem, which I'm not inclined to investigate. Jonathan

I guess you don't have your sound card wired into your stereo. BTW, blow by the Radio Shack for the necessary parts, 'kuz there, you'll need three, whereas you'll only need one if you find the right "Everything For a Dollar" clone, and it'll cost less than ONE of the Radio Shack parts. That's about 5:1, plus the tech at Radio Shack will probably try to sell you a part that makes your output monaural.

Sorry, but my sound card(s) are hooked into a stereo system. I have a four-channel stereo mixer that combines the sound card outputs from three of my computers with my electronic keyboard, and feeds that into an amp (courtesy of Radio Shack, BTW). I've never pursued making sound from Fractint because it really doesn't interest me much. I have another program (Well Tempered Fractal) around here to turn fractals into sound.
