No longer have a DOS/Win 95 computer. Fractint may have been the program I thoroughly enjoyed. I just booted up an XP desktop and probably have a Win 98. What program will run and 'cycle' fractal creations in either system? Thanks, Richard

You should not have any problems running FractInt on a Win-98 system (at least I have not heard of anyone having difficulties with such). But there could be problems on an XP machine. Not all of them function well with FractInt. You will just have to try it out on yours and see what happens. But you can still create fractals by using the "Disk-Video" Mode if you have problems getting the display to work. Another option is to use Paul de Leeuw's MANPWIN program, which should work quite well with FractInt files (.FRM, .PAR, .MAP, etc...). I believe the latest version is 3.01, and may be found at he following location: http://www.deleeuw.com.au/ Sincerely, P.N.L. -------------------------------------- http://www.Nahee.com/PNL/Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/
Thanks Paul The XP is inhabited by the ghost of viruses past. Win 98 may be better. It unfortunately sounds like a Hoover upright! Cheers On Fri, Jun 7, 2013 at 2:06 PM, Paul N. Lee <Paul.N.Lee@att.net> wrote:

There was also a Windows version of Fractint available. I don't remember where I found it, maybe on P. N. Lee's site? I don't know if it's anywhere near current - is it? Ah, here's the Fractal Forum post about it with link to the installer: http://www.fractalforums.com/announcements-and-news/fractint-under-windows-%... Another Windows fractal generator I've used is ChaosPro. It can load some Fractint formula and PAR files, but may not be able to handle everything in them: http://www.chaospro.de/features.php Other options: Install the free VirtualBox on your XP system, then install your old DOS on a virtual machine and run it there. Install the free DOSBox on your XP system, and run DOS Fractint using that. Dump XP, switch to Linux, and run the Linux version, XFractint. Or switch to Linux and use VirtualBox or DOSBox to run your DOS Fractint. I have DOS Fractint running happily under DOSBox on Linux. Or you could set up your XP machine to dual boot, and install FreeDOS on a small partition, boot that and run your regular Fractint setup: http://www.freedos.org/ Lots of different ways. Ages back, I had a machine that dualbooted OS/2 and Windows98. DOS Fractint ran very happily under OS/2 (I could even minimize the terminal window and let it generate happily in the background). Same Fractint froze Windows98 when it ran. So W98 isn't necessarily a better solution than XP! On 06/07/2013 04:03 PM, Ram Peloquin wrote:

The easiest way to run Fractint is to use DosBox (http://www.dosbox.com). DosBox is easy to install and use, runs on all versions of Windows, and Fractint runs fine in it, albeit rather slowly. You can also try one of the SVN builds (whatever that means?) of DosBox which have more capability, that is, runs Fractint in 1600x1200. See http://ykhwong.x-y.net The most capable native Windows program for fractals that I know of is UltraFractal (http://www.ultrafractal.com). It is about 90 percent compatible with Fractint, that is, it reads par, frm, etc. files. It has a huge number of options but costs USD $39/69/129 depending on which version you want. I have been using Fractint under a copy of Microsoft Dos 6.1 under Oracle VM VitualBox and it works fine. I also have been using Gnofract 4D (Fedora 17 64bit on an Intel Dual Core with 2gb of ram) ... Same machine as the Oracle VM VitualBox It is a great free upgrade from Fractint and supports most of the Fractint features. It will allow you 16bit color and images sizes that are very large (I have generated 4000x6000 size images with no issues) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Grasso" <nick@nickgrasso.com> To: "Fractint and General Fractals Discussion" <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2013 2:53 PM Subject: Re: [Fractint] Hi

Unfortunately, it won't install due to dependency on "python <<2.7". I have Python 2.7.3 installed (Sid now has 2.7.5). Couldn't find anything on the Gnofract4D site about how to deal with that problem. Maybe it works with any Python 2.7 but their DEB package has its dependency info wrong? RE: Gnofract 4D ... I am using version 3.13 (It was the version that Fedora's package manager had in the library, I have not tried to install the latest version 3.14.1) There are notes on the sourceforge.net site about DEB packages and the newer versions for Fedora, they say to install from source. The 3.13 version works (with a few bugs) for what I have been doing, It does not support all the Fractint functions (but has most of them) I have not tried it on other Linux OS versions I set the machine up that it is installed on just to do Fractals and it is mostly stable so I have not experimented on other OS. There are notes on the sourceforge site that some of the authors have compiled it on Win XP but I have not tried it. I also have it installed on an old Lenovo laptop under Fedora (my Linux of choice for most things) There is a post on the sourceforge site that says they compiled it on a Ubuntu 12.10 system and it ran OK (I think Ubuntu has it roots still mostly in the Deb family) (It also said that the Deb package failed to install, so you may have to compile it from source on your Deb system) ----- Original Message ----- From: "david" <gnome@hawaii.rr.com> To: "Fractint and General Fractals Discussion" <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2013 9:41 PM Subject: Re: [Fractint] Hi

Sorry for the late response. I have been away (almost ran into Jonathan in Iowa but we didn't manage it this time.) On top of that I reorganized the way I do email and just realized I am not set up very well to notice Fractint list traffic. I will remedy that. Your question got a lot of good answers here on the list. Thanks to those who responded. Of the suggestions, I like using DosBox the best. I am also experimenting with older versions of Windows, DOS, etc. I like DOSBox because it has terrific VESA video support built in. Running on older Windows versions or DOS itself has the problem that you have to take some additional steps to get very many video modes working. I'm not even very sure how to do that any more. With DOSBox, especially the "DOSBox svn" version (see http://ykhwong.x-y.net/xe/143), there are a lot of high resolution VESA video modes that fractint can use built in. What I do is run the ancient vesainfo.exe utility under DOSBox to see what modes are available, and then edit fractint.cfg appropriately. It's crazy for folks (including me) to keep rediscovering how to do this, so I will make some of the files available. Of course, as was mentioned by Nick Grasso in his reply, DOSBox runs under just about every operating system. I even got it (and Fractint) running on my Samsung Galaxy S3, though that combination isn't a very usable, at least without a little more work. Tim _____________________________________________
