Monitor display question
I don't know if this is the proper protocol to try to get an answer for a problem I'm having, but I'll send it and see what happens. I am trying to run FRACTINT 20.0 in a machine that has a Pentium 5 processor, 512M of memory and MicroSoft XP Pro as the operating system. My video chips are GeForce4 MX440, BIOS 4.17.00.28. Fractint works at 640x480x256, but when I try to choose 800x600x256, I get two clicks and a blank screen out of the monitor. ESC takes me back to the Fractint menu. 800x600 is my normal screen resolution for everything else under WinXP Pro. Can anyone tell what I need to do to get this to work? Thanks Richard M Teeter

First off, you may wish to get a more current release to run with. Here are some links that may be of use: http://www.fractint.org/ (latest Developer's version) http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/ (older official release ver.) http://www.Nahee.com/Software/Wins1821.Zip (older Windows ver.) http://www.deleeuw.com.au/ "ManPWin" (loosely based Windows ver.)

The problem is with XP and what it controls. You could create a Win-98 Boot Disk and run FractInt that way. You can get all the files that come on the distributed Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Boot Disk from the following location. They are in a ZIP file and must be extracted to a floppy: http://www.Nahee.com/Software/ Look for a file called "Win98-SE_Boot.zip".

You may wish to look into running the "MAKEFCFG.EXE" program to see if that will create the correct configurations needed for your system. That program reads VESA Video BIOS and writes the "FRACTINT.CFG" file with VESA video modes. You might also need to right-click the FRACTINT.EXE module and change some of the Property settings to have it run more closely to an older Windows OS. And, you might need to create a FAT partition, since NTFS may also cause some problems. There are no set 'fixes' these days when it comes to running FractInt on the newer machines using Win-XP. Everyone that eventually gets it working usually does so by making adustments until it begins to function correctly. Some individuals resort to using disk-video and batch-mode, then view the output with a graphic editor. For speculation purposes, 640x480 does work, and I'm very glad to see this question here instead of on the buglist. You'll find that FRACTINT is worth an ego trip for saturating your CPU for five minutes at low resolution, nevermind the hours you can spend gloating over a modern computer that you've managed to feed over a quarter million indefinite questions to. While I can't tell you much about version 18.6 for Windows and the XFractint version for Linux that would operate at the resolution of XWindows, you've got this one working, so I wouldn't sweat it until you know which version you might want to play with...or whether you might want to shop around for (or download) VESA compliance to plug into your machine.
