We are dropping the ball in saving old fractal resources. Thanks for shining a spotlight on this important issue, Roger.
Below are a few more links attempting to list some resources that are still available. ========== Fortunately, the link Roger gave for " Jim's FOTD archive" is not the site where Jim actually posted/is posting his FOTDs. The link you gave: https://user.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/fotd/index.html is actually where Richard Thomson previously hosted versions of Jim's FOTD images that he rendered at higher resolution (1600×1200) with 3X anti-aliasing. His version of Jim's images had the delicious detail that I always long for in smaller versions of FOTD images. I'm sad that Richard's images are no longer available -- especially with disk storage as inexpensive as it has become. Richard said this about his versions of Jim's FOTD on his blog: http://tinyurl.com/RichardsBigFOTDfractals : https://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com/2010/06/16/big-fractals-rss-feed-cre ated/ and: http://tinyurl.com/RichardBigFOTDfractalsEnhanced : https://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com/2010/08/23/jim-muths-fractal-of-the- day-rss-feed-enhanced/ ========== While reading through Richard's blog I found that his blog has valuable entries in his "Categories" sidebar: https://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com/ Just now, I ran across a set of larger images that Richard calculated, similar to his now-gone FOTD images, -- of Roger Alexander's -- called "Max Iters Fractal Follies": http://tinyurl.com/RichardsMaxItersFractalFollies : https://legalizeadulthood.wordpress.com/2010/09/17/max-iters-fractal-follies / Richard's versions of Roger's images are fortunately are still available to view. Roger Alexander's Fractint images (originally posted to the Fractint List) rendered by Richard: https://user.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/maxiter/ Roger Alexander's blog (2010): http://maxitersfractalfollies.blogspot.com/ ========== Jim Muth's FOTD was originally hosted on Paul N. Lee's now-defunct server. However, archive.org hosts copies of the pages, including Jim's comments and PARs & Formulas (less most of the images) here: http://tinyurl.com/archveOrgNahee-comJimMuthsFOTD : https://web.archive.org/web/20170706035232/http://www.nahee.com/FOTD/ When Paul became ill and stopped putting Jim's Fractint list FOTD posts and images on his server in November 2010, I started to temporarily calculate Jim's images and put them on my server in a "minimalist" layout -- until Paul returned to put Jim's FOTD posts onto his nahee.com site again. However, as we know, Paul was never able to return to doing this. ========== These are Jim's FOTD images -- starting in November 2010 -- on my site: http://tinyurl.com/HalHostingJimsFOTDnov2010 : http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html In addition to the images I calculated and put onto my site, I initially also hosted Jim's full posts, including the PARs and FRMs from his posts, but I eventually stopped including those, since they were available elsewhere. I was prompted by Jim's interesting fractals and comments to explore them further, and I included images of my "investigations" on my web pages of Jim's FOTD. I calculated them larger than Jim's default 640x480 resolution, and usually anti-aliased them. They really are "investigations" and not intended as, say, candidates for a fractal art gallery. My images try to show the richness of the formulas and color maps that Jim uses in his FOTD images. Note that the links on my site that point to Paul's server ("http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/") are no longer valid. Use this link: http://tinyurl.com/archveOrgNahee-comJimMuthsFOTD to see what archive.org currently has from Paul's server. ========== Jim now has his own personal Fractal of the Day web site (the current official site) at: http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html It's shared with Fractal Lady's (FL's) CrosScan puzzle site and, as of the date of this post, has FOTD posts through March 16, 2015. Jim also reached back and uploaded many of his older FOTD posts, starting with his original FOTD post on April 11, 1997. I also discovered this interesting pre-FOTD entry of Jim's on Paul's archived site -- this page *does* include an important image -- of Jim. Highly recommended. "02 March, 1997 A brief introduction" 'From: The Fractal-Art Discussion List ' here: http://tinyurl.com/JimTheFractalArtDiscussionList : https://web.archive.org/web/20150606070917/http://www.nahee.com/FOTD/Jim_Mut h.html ========== I'd like to emphasize that included within Paul's full fractal site: http://tinyurl.com/archveOrg-NaheeCom-Fractals : https://web.archive.org/web/20170814000151/http://www.nahee.com/Fractals/ at archive.org is a "revised" (by Paul) version of the large *Spanky Fractal Database*. http://tinyurl.com/archveOrgNaheeSpankyFractalDB : https://web.archive.org/web/20161202100319/http://www.nahee.com/spanky "Noel Giffin <noel@triumf.ca> maintained the old, original site of this fractal database at spanky.triumf.ca for many years." Archive.org also has an older version of the Spanky Fractal Database from: spanky.triumf.ca. - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint <fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of Roger Kaufman Sent: Saturday, March 9, 2019 8:44 AM To: Fractint@mailman.xmission.com Subject: [Fractint] Archiving Web Sites Hi All, We are dropping the ball in saving old fractal resources.
