Sciwise, I'm glad to hear that you and your relative are OK.
For some reason people were making a fuss about lights on the horizon, If you ever learn what those lights associated with the quake actually were determined to be, I'd be interested to know.
I've read about light associated with earthquakes -- but I was amazed to see that there was an apparently comprehensive overview of the phenomenon in Wikipedia -- with 20 references: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_light "During the 2007 Peru earthquake lights were seen in the skies above the sea and filmed by many people. The phenomenon was also observed and caught on film during the 2009 L'Aquilaand the 2010 Chile earthquakes."
From one of the references:
...observations of earthquake lights date back hundreds of years. But most reports are for quakes with high magnitudes, of 5 or greater on the Richter scale. ... Rutgers University biomedical engineer Troy Shinbrot. His lab has created a miniature model of earthquake-like jamming and cracking, and has found huge voltage jumps that result from the shifting of granular material used to mimic the earth. ... Boston College seismologist John Ebel ... said, "I personally think that there are legitimate observations of lightning-like dis-charges - electrical glows of some sort - that occur before earthquakes," said Ebel, who was not involved in the study. "There's too much evidence to discount their existence." ... Mercury glows as it slides on glass, Scotch Tape lights up as it is ripped off the roll and Wint O Green Life Savers mints create a spark when bitten. "These are effects that occur when cracks open," Shinbrot said. "All of the data is really fascinating and unexplained." http://tinyurl.com/Earthquake-lights2 or: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/experiments-at-rutger s-lend-credence-to-existence-of-earthquake-lights/2014/03/06/241a1a9c-a4c7-1 1e3-8466-d34c451760b9_story.html --------------- At this reference: http://tinyurl.com/Did-you-see-flashes-Yep or: http://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/2586646-181/did-you-see-flashes-yep#page=1 there's security camera footage of lightning-like flashes in the distance just after the camera begins rocking. A researcher also discusses "earthquake lights" in the article. The timing of the earthquake and the flashes in the video above certainly could be a coincidence, but you begin to wonder after reading about so many coincidenses -- whether they are actually coincidental... But, you are certainly *also* correct that the "...lights on the horizon, this might of been anything from a fire to a transformer going." - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint [mailto:fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of sciwise@ihug.co.nz Sent: Tuesday, November 15, 2016 4:49 AM To: Harold Lane <hallane@earthlink.net> Cc: 'Fractint and General Fractals Discussion' <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Fractint] I live in New Zealand , where there are major fault lines around the country. Hi, Thanks for your concern. Yes I do live in New Zealand . I live in the North Island some considerable distance from the epicenter of these recurring geological disturbances. The 2011 earthquake that devastated Christchurch was magnitude 5.8 , this recent one was 7.8 ; however this was some distance from Christchurch and other major cities. The capital , in Wellington , was shaken up a fair bit , this seems like a first time as far as I know. For some reason people were making a fuss about lights on the horizon, this might of been anything from a fire to a transformer going . I did notice the quake and awoke to find my bed , which is upon small wheels, rolling with the quake. What surprised me was that the internet survived and I was able to contact a relative who lives closer to the capital he was okay too. Were you affected by the current earthquake and aftershocks? Are you OK?

Hi I live in New Zealand , where there are major fault lines around the country.
The Christchurch earthquake that made the news a few years ago was
quite devastating ; problems with liquefaction , in the suburbs persist
through to the present.
The inner city was built upon basaltic rock , nevertheless there was widespread damage to new and old buildings alike.
Prior to the earthquake various oil
companies were using horizontal
drilling in an attempt to find oil and gas deposits.
Of course earthquake fissures assume a fractal pattern.
If you've ever read about Nikola . Tesla then you might appreciate how he was dealing with fractal objects ; like the electrical discharges that he was so well known for.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing of all I have gotten into is the furor between materialists and idealists over the meaning of the quantum discoveries of the past almost 100 years as they apply to the everyday world. I see materialists defending their position that the material world is real, while idealists are claiming that material is an illusion created by the mind, a belief that supports the mystical claims of
and results of experiments to make it appear as their own theory of reality is true, but to me at least, it appears that the materialist side is doing the greater amount of spinning. I also notice that materialists are quicker to slip into anger and launch ad hominem attacks e no real rebuttal of idealist claims. To me this is how people react when they begin to doubt their own beliefs. Then again, maybe it's all a tempest in a teapot . . .
