David,
1) Any chance of getting it to recognize the various subfolders I have stuff organized into (FMR, IFS, etc)? I have my various fractal projects all located in a folder called WORK, it would be nice to be able to browse to it and get back to working on my images. It only seems to be able to see items in the folder you were in when you started it - nothing above or below that.
The latest developer's version should have this fixed. If it isn't, let me know.
I installed the most recent binary package I found on the XFractint site 20.02.4. Is that the latest developer's version? If so, it doesn't seem to be working.
2) Does it use the SSTOOLS.INI? I copied mine over and updated it to reflect the new Linux paths, it reads it (at least it gave me some error messages that were fixed by remming out some [labels]) but doesn't seem to be picking up any paths or preferences from it.
Same answer.
Then I'll await the answer to my question above.
3) No pallette editing? Pressing the E key with either window active does nothing. Not that I think Fractint's palette editing UI is very usable, but it would be nice to have around. 8-(
This is basically true even with the latest developer's version. The palette editor will come up, but I haven't figured out how to update the screen image without redrawing the fractal.
Hmm, I don't even get the pallette editor to come up. But there are other keys that don't seem to work as the program indicates, so maybe running it under a Debian distribution or something about my xterm settings is messing that up. My workaround for pallette editing with the DOS Fractintt was to make my color changes to a copy of the image (using a graphics app), then opening that image in Fractint and saving the pallete from it, then reopening my original image and loading the revised pallette. A multistep process, but I found it much more convenient than doing it in Fractint - especiallys ince I could zoom into particular areas where I was reworking the colors and see things better. ;-)
4) Any other how-to resources around for it?
Not that I am aware of.
Dang ... if I had any spare time left, that might be a worthy project to take on. Thanks! David gnome@hawaii.rr.com
