[I] like seeing the MSet constructed pixel by pixel with orbits. If there was a way to save the image every tenth second it would make a nice video animation.
I really like the real-time orbits too!
Capturing the orbits "in flagrante" is a great idea!
Besides going into the CTRL-F sound screen and flipping the show orbits flag, or pressing o before an image haz been calculated, or "g showorbits=yes enter", border tracing is a major element of what makes "Out_Of_Orbit" interesting. Border tracing does not work on default parameters for mandel. Border tracing is the fastest rendition method, and sometimes it does not work at all, usually when no pixels are on the borders of your screen. My usual method for speeding up Jim's fractals is to try border tracing (passes=b), and if that does not work, then use passes=t. MAYBE IF BORDER TRACING TESTED WATER IN THE MIDDLE OF AN IMAGE, IT WOULD BE MORE RELIABLE. Sometimes, I will make the iterations maximum and escape limits into something sane, too -- and see if I don't get _pretty much_ the same thing.
I'm going to try to remember to see if video screen cap S/W can do what you suggest.
If you don't hear from me in a while on this subject, please rattle my cage.
I will make one release of the video (in stereo), since you can see it if you use fractint for DOS.
