Probably the popular images are the ones which happened to be high up on Google or some other search engine's listings. The one you mentioned seems to be 5th in line according to this search. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:of... Until Google learns to give higher weight to artistically more pleasing images, I'm afraid the ordering of the images in their index is likely to be somewhat random. Greetings,
A few weeks ago, while reviewing the web logs, I had noticed that this one particular web page: http://home.att.net/~Fractals_2/FotD_02-01-29.html had increased in the volume of requests. And now, based upon the statistics over the past 90 days, I see that it has received over 11,835 requests, but the web page counter only shows it at 7,591 accesses. And the actual requests against the image itself is around 7,602.
Guess I need to do some researching into why the counts vary so much, and see what is really going on.
On a side note, the FOTD hosting site has had an approximate 10% increase in activity over the past few weeks. Several images seem to be very popular as of late, though most of them are over six years old.
