Tim, Thanks for your efforts to get the archives back. There is not a need to rush to do anything immediately, so perhaps you could ping Xmission and Rich -- say once a week -- for a few more weeks and see if you get a response. At least you can delay the decision of possibly needing to rehost the list elsewhere... - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message----- From: Fractint <fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> On Behalf Of Timothy Wegner Sent: Sunday, June 2, 2019 9:01 AM To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Fractint] Fractint Archives I have not heard back from xmission support about the link to fractint list archives (and links to all xmission list archives) not working. I have tried multiple ways of communicating. Nor have I heard back from Rich Thompson, who was instrumental in the list being hosted at xmission in the first place. While I don't fault xmission for not allocating valuable support resources to a free service, I am puzzled, because in the past they have been very responsive. I suspect the lack of archives is a policy decision on their part, maybe to avoid exposing emails. (Yes, public list archives pose a security, or at least a privacy, risk). But I don't know for a fact if xmission has intentionally disabled archives. The list seems to be running smoothly, other than the lack of archives. Traffic ebbs and flows with interest, which is fine with me. Xmission somehow magically keeps spammers off the list (I don't moderate subscriptions, so this seems like a miracle to me). Here are two alternatives: 1. No change. List remains as it is now. 2. Rehost the list elsewhere, where the fractint.net and fractint.org domains are hosted. The list would be named something like " list.fractint.org", and would have archives going forward. The downside of 1. is no archives. The upside is no disruption. Since the list is very old, and about a very old piece of software, maybe rehosting the list is a bad idea if not absolutely necessary. The downside of 2. is inevitably there would be some disruption. I can resubscribe everyone to the new list, but might miss any special settings they have set. Plus the list address would be different. On the upside, it would be nice to have the list address use a fractint domain, but this is not a big deal. And of course, there would be archives, with the privacy risk I mentioned above. Thoughts?
