I am STILL learning things about [Fractint]! Like hitting the "L" key while color cycling to see and choose MAP files from the directory.
One of the Fractint features that I didn't discover for quite a while was that in the "E" color palette/map editor, it can not only "L"oad different color map .MAP files, but it also has 8 temporary map locations. You can load, rotate, create new random maps, etc. and temporarily hold onto each of them -- and switch between using any of these temporary maps with a "touch of a key" specifically: F2 - F9. The "Save to Temporary Color Palette" keys are: <shift>F2 - F9. Whatever color palette is being used when you exit the "E" color editor will be the one saved with the image, when you save it. Note that the contents of all the temporary color maps are lost when you exit the color editor, so if you have created a palette/map you don't want to lose, switch to using it, and "S"ave it to a .MAP file while you're still in the color editor. You have to add the ".MAP" to the file name -- Fractint doesn't supply it. Note that F2 - F9 have a different use in the "C" Color Cycling Commands mode. Another of my favorite discoveries in the "E" color palette/map editor is the "X" key: "<X> - Toggle 'exclude' mode on or off - when toggled on, only those image pixels which match the active color are displayed." I find it useful to see all the locations in a fractal that a particular color is used. You can select the color by moving the cursor over the grid of color "chips" or the image itself. Repeatedly hit "X" to bring back the full complement of color chips -- that temporarily disappear in exclude mode. If your Fractint Color Editor cursor is not able to be moved with your mouse, remember that the <ctrl> key accelerates the movement of the arrow keys... There are numerous additional goodies in the "E" color/palette editor -- many of which I still don't know how to use... Ethan Nagel created the palette editor. If you have the MAP, CFG and sstools.ini present it should just come up and run. You can also type "fractint makedoc" and it will create a large and detailed instruction file; it has a "doc" extension but it is a plain ascii text file - read it from DOS or windows notepad.
