Tony, Tim, For what it's worth -- on my Win 10 system: - my copy of 20.05 alpha FractSDL *will* do SF9 video (1280 x 1024 x 256) correctly when selected from the <del>key list of video modes. My display is set at 1680 x 1050. - Rendering the default M-set with AF7 [AF7 ,Disk/RAM 'Video' , 11, 1024, 768,256,] says, "Image has been completed" quickly, but when I type <S> to save the image it "counts up" saying: "reading line <nnn>" for about a full minute before it says "File saved as fract00<n>.gif". The saved file *is* 1024 x 768 but full of black pixels, instead of the default M-set. - FractSDL correctly calculates the default M-set in visible video modes *after* writing out the all-black file using the built-in AF7 Disk/RAM 'Video' values. When I pasted your CF2, CF3, CF4 and CF5 specs onto the bottom of Fractint.cfg, FractSDL when starting says, "File FRACTINT.CFG is missing or invalid. Continuing w built-in video modes. Any key..." The highest video mode then shows as SF8. Inserting CF2, CF3, CF4 and CF5 between AF7 and its following line gives the same "missing or invalid" message. I discovered that the mouse cursor can be dragged on an image to create an apparently correctly working zoom box. It "auto-zooms in", so I couldn't use <ctrl><Enter> to zoom out. <ctrl><Enter> (with a zoom box present) apparently zooms out correctly. While viewing the default M-set, hitting <space> apparently creates the correct Julia set specified by the cursor location in the lower right corner, but extremely slowly. The Julia set has differently colored pixels from Richard's instantly rendered Fractint for Windows corresponding Julia set. Hitting <space> a 2nd time apparently creates the correct Julia set -- essentially instantly. Essentially all of the built-in fractals invoked by <2> (Parameter Set Selections) calculate an image. However, "Filament" gives, "Oops. I couldn't understand the argument: corners=... Any key to continue." And SWT-027 gives "Could not load color map headache.map. Any key..." However, headache.map is present in the /map/ directory. <e> lets you load a color map, but no other Color Editor functions are implemented yet. <c> appears to not do anything. I might be wrong -- I don't use the <c> color map functions. <ctrl><Insert> and <ctrl><Del> don't appear to change the zoom boxes' color yet. Zoom box rotation <ctrl><numpad+> and <ctrl><numpad-> is not implemented yet. It's great that essentially all of the built-in fractals (Parameter Sets) invoked by <2> work! Quite a lot is working, Jonathan! Tony, I couldn't get FractSDL to successfullly read Fractint.cfg after *removing* your CF2, CF3, CF4 and CF5 settings I had inserted. I had to revert to a backed up Fractint.cfg to get FractSDL to read it successfully again. Possibly the Notepad text editor changed the internal text file format from UTF-8 to ANSI or something similar happened... - Hal Lane ######################## # hallane@earthlink.net ######################## -----Original Message--------------------------------------------------------------------- -- From: Fractint [mailto:fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Tony Hanmer Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2017 1:48 AM To: Fractint and General Fractals Discussion <fractint@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: Re: [Fractint] Windows SDL Port Thanks for asking, Tim! In the Fractint.cfg file, these modes cause an instant crash: SF9 ,256 color mode , 8, 1280, 1024,256, CF2 ,Win32 Disk Video , 11,30000,22500,256,disk CF3 ,Win32 Disk Video , 11,16304,12228,256,disk CF4 ,Win32 Disk Video , 11,32608,24456,256,disk CF5 ,Win32 Disk Video , 11, 3200, 2400,256,disk All but the first are ones I copied & pasted from other copies of the file which worked for me in other versions, especially but not only DOS ones, e.g. also WinFract versions. Tony, could you provide me with details of examples that crash the SDL fractint? I can't tell from your report exactly what you were attempting. As simple an example as you can make would be useful. Is the problem mainly the video mode?
Thanks,
Tim

Great to see! Wanting to know how to add large disk render modes in Fractint.cfg using Notepad - I've cut & pasted some of my old ones from other DOS-based Fractints, but these cause the program to crash instantly, even as small as 4000 by 3000 pixels, and I want to go as large as, say, 30000 by 22500... Help please?

Wow! This is pretty exciting for me. Have been wanting to dip my toe back in but frankly time-slammed between work, getting my late parents' home ready for sale, and the upcoming eclipse. But I'll keep an eye on this and probably check it out after the dust settles in a month or two on my Win 10 PC.
Aloha, Bud

First a huge disclaimer - Jonathan Osuch has a very demanding job and can only work on fractint a few hours a week, if that. So he can't respond to feedback in a timely way. This is not to say he doesn't want feedback.
That said, Jonathan has been working on an SDL ( https://www.libsdl.org/) port of fractint that runs natively on Windows, including Windows 10. This effort is hiding in plain site on the website here: http://fractint.net/ftp/experimental/ Just download the SDL*.zip file, dump the contents somewhere, navigate to the fractint.exe file, and run it.
The SDL port can potentially be compiled on other platforms, e.g. Ubuntu Linux, but Jonathan doesn't have that working yet.
A couple of points.
This is a literal port of the classical DOS fractint, not a normal windows application. So the interface looks a lot like the DOS fractint, and is probably hard to use if you are not familiar with the classic version. This is not even a winfract port, which has some windows interface features.
This is alpha quality. An amazing amount works but some things (probably a lot of things) don't.
It would be interesting for some of you DOS fractint experts to give this a try. If it seems promising, you might consider some systematic testing (might be premature).
Since the list is quiet these days, I see no harm in discussing the results here. Probably you folks can help each other out, since Jonathan will only occasionally be able to chime in.
