The most mentionable event here at FC on Saturday was when FL suggested that we go on Facebook and I disagreed. When she replied that everyone is doing it, I told her that this is a good reason not to. People get ahead in the world when they do what everyone else is NOT doing, not when they join the crowd like a flock of sheep. Then she told me that with all the stuff I write in my FOTD discussions, we might as well be on Facebook. This might be true, but not nearly as many on Facebook have been writing daily discussions about fractals for over 13 years.
Well, since Facebook has no discernible interest in its members' privacy, and many many websites now hook back into Facebook to facility invading their privacy even more, you're a smart young man. Putting anything on Facebook means I won't see it!
I was slow on the facebook wagon, partly because a lot of personal information about me is already available on the internet if you know where to look. IOW, I did not see much point: My given and family names are apparently unique on the internet. Plus I am getting plenty of interactivity on USENET; more than I need, given all the toys in my computer without the internet. One problem concerning personally identifiable information is perhaps my age. If someone wants to believe I am their age, I am not prone to correcting them: You can hide the year of your birth if you scroll-right far enough. I am not sure if that number is hidden from applications. Another one is that my aunts identify themselves with their maiden names, making it easier to connect with classmates. That was a problem back when I had a Visa. I live within my means, however meagre. Hopefully, Visa has more sophisticated security questions these days. I know that the agency where I do my taxes does. _______ On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog, unless your webcam is trained on your toilet, and that is where you drink.
