Ok what dos either can read NTFS or fit with fractint on a floppy? David Jones wrote:
Standard resolution is what - 640x480, 1024x768? Does it malfunction at all resolutions? Is it the same resolution you're running for your Windows desktop?
Maybe try booting a DOS disk and running Fractint from that. If it works fine then, I'd say it's a conflict with the Windows video drivers. If it still doesn't work, you've got a hardware issue that may or may not be resolvable.

ok in the standard video setting, I get an image, then garbage when I try to leave it. If I set textsave=safe, I cannot leave it. I can use the windows key to switch out, and when I go back to fractint, the image is still there. This computer runs at 1.9 GHz and has 512 MB memory and should perform well for fractals if I can get fractint to work.

Might try to make sure your video drivers are current. Also, you might want to start Fractint with the "textsafe=save" option (sorry, I probably have it messed up, been a long time since I ran Fractint under Windows and I don't have to screw around with that kind of stuff to have it run flawlessly under OS/2).
Don't know if there are any compatibility settings under WXP that you might want to look into. Part of the problem may be that WNT/2K/XP maintain tight control over the actual hardware, while Fractint expects to get direct access. That's probably what's limiting your selection of usable video modes.
Outside of that, sounds like you have the same problem that I had with Fractint and Windows9x - they fight over the video hardware. On my old W9x system, the whole thing would freeze.

Anybody been able to get fractint to work on a newer xp laptop? I could try disk video, but haven't worked that out. Trying some of the basic modes the fractal is drawn, but then when I go back to the text screen I get scrambling, when I force fractint to close, explorer is scrambled. I was going to keep trying modes until something worked, but on one, the fractal never went away, and forced a power reset to get out. I'm trying manpwin, and this computer is pretty fast to the limits of the program, but I'd like to get to locations others have found with fractint, and fractal types in fractint.
