FOTD -- October 28, 2004 (Rating None) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image was created by the 'julia_inverse' formula -- Zn+1=Zn+-sqrt(Z-C). This formula is one that plots orbits. It is not an escape-time formula, as all the formulas that I have used until now have been, but it draws some quite attractive images, so I have decided to include it in my tour of the Frac- tint escape-time formulae. It is known as the 'inverse' Julia formula because instead of being attracted to infinity or to attractor points within the Julia set, the iterated points are repelled by these attractors, which causes the points to settle along the boundary of the Julia sets. I chose to draw the Julia set of a point in Seahorse Valley, where the border of the set twists into two great spirals. The shape of this set is quite familiar; its appearance in today's image is unique however. The image renders one pixel at a time, and the first few seconds of calculation are quite dull, so do not become disappointed by the slow start. The image does not come to life until it is nearly completed. I named the image "Ultraviolet Julia". When I saw the image, I was reminded of a florescent object glowing brilliant green under the deep violet light of an ultraviolet bulb. Though I gave it no rating, (If I had, the rating would have been around 6.), the finished product is well worth the time spent rendering it. And even this brief time may be bypassed by downloading the completed GIF image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> We had more sun than expected here at Fractal Central on Wednes- day. Combined with a temperature of 65F 18C, the sun must have pleased the fractal cats, who actually seemed happy with their time in the yard. Only a small treat of tuna was needed to end their day satisfactorily. My day ended satisfactorily when the clouds broke just enough to give occasional clear views of the progress of the Wednesday evening lunar eclipse. Today looks to be about the same. I would say we are headed for another un- eventful cat day. My day looks to be about the same also, and that means another fractal is in the works. You will not want to miss the next fractal when it appears in 24 hours, for it will rate a 9-1/2, as close to perfection as it is possible for a fractal to come without actually being perfect, (and nothing but the Deity is perfect).
