Bill: Sometimes XP comes installed with the defaul;t NTFS file system. Dos 7 can only read FAT or FAT32 file systems. If you have a lot of "legacy" software that might not be able to read or see the NTFS file system, then I suggest you re-install WinXP with FAT or FAT32 file system. My preference is FAT32. I think WinXp has some kind of partition utility (NOT FDD) that allows you to set up a second partition and drive in FAT or FAT32. I don't know whether or not you have to delete the first partition If you still have lots of free space on your HDD, you can use a a 3rd party partition utility like PartitionMagic to set up a second drive in FAT or FAT32. I think that even partition Magic allows you to somehow convert partition file systems back and forth. You can then load Fractint once you've created your FAT or FAT32 partition. Tony,
Sorry to keep bugging you. I've spent the morning trying your suggestions.
1. I finally got a floppy drive working on my computer. 2. I created a DOS boot disk and rebooted from it. 3. I got an A: prompt, but it wouldn't see my C: drive. 4. I booted back to XP and copied makefcfg.exe to the boot diskette. 5. I booted back to DOS and ran makefcfg.exe. I got the message No DPMI - Get csdpmi*b.zip 6. I went back to XP and surfed the web. I found the csdpmi3b.zip. I also read that the operable file in the zip is cwsdpmi.exe. You run this first, then you can run your DOS application. I put cwsdpmi.exe on the boot disk. 7. I booted back to DOS and ran cwsdpmi.exe and then ran makefcfg.exe. It ran and created fractint.cfg. 8. I booted back to XP and copied fractin.cfg to the C: drive with my Fractint files. Still no luck getting any resolution above 640 x 480 to run.
You seem to have more experience then me with XP. Any ideas about all this? Thanks.
Bill
