Very sad to hear of Paul's passing. My condolences to his family, friends, and the fractal community. It's been a rough cancer year so far, with many notables leaving us in not quite two months yet. I suppose in general it's no more or less than usual, just a coincidental surge in celebrities, but I am certainly more aware if it. For my part I'm crossing my fingers. I have no family history of it, but could still be in for a case of melanoma from a severe sunburn I received almost 36 years ago in Hawaii. Or another kind entirely from no apparent cause. You just never know. Hopefully our rapidly increasing understanding of genetics will lead to cures sooner rather than later. A couple of years ago, I had some problems when my messages to various people, including him, were bounced. He made many helpful suggestions to me away from the list. In the end I discovered that the problem was caused by my ISP being taken over by a larger company. Its incompetence resulted in the Grapevine domain name being blacklisted by several mail servers including AT&T. Some people may not know that Paul had a long and quite ghastly time with cancer and had countless surgical and medical interventions. Despite this, he kept posting. His story resonated with me as a cancer survivor. I was fortunate not only to have a good oncologist and a good haematologist, and to live in a country with a rather better health funding system than the US, but there was a genetically modified drug capable of treating my form of cancer, which, followed by an autologous stem cell transplant and a long convalescence, more than sixteen years ago, proved quite effective. Others are less lucky. I am also delighted that the Fractint list may not be moribund. Since Albrecht's latest dummy-spit, the list has been very quiet. It was great to hear that Jim Muth may resume posting fractals at least occasionally. For many of us Jim's FOTD epitomises what the list is about.
