Whoah! I made that mistake, too. I copied a bunch of pars, frms etc from DOS Fractint to the Windows version. Then I accidentally hit that makefconfig, and got the exact result you have described. I was baffled by the death of Fractint for Windows until I corrected it by restoring the proper CFG file from fractcfg.old, instead of that text file which makefconfig left me!

Is Makecfg still supposed to work with the new Fractint for Windows beta?
I read a post today which reminded me that I hadn't tried it. When I ran it I created this fractint.cfg file:
---------------------------- Makefcfg 1.0 -- A Fractint video utility by The Stone Soup Group Option settings (try makefcfg -h to see how to set): Showing 256 color modes [yes] (always) Showing truecolor modes [no ] (default no) Showing 16 color modes [no ] (default no) Starting FKEY [F2 ] (default F2) Overwrite fractfg.old [no ] (default no)
fractint.cfg exists - renaming to fractcfg.old Reading your VESA Video BIOS ... Begin writing fractint.cfg Can't open fractint.cfg Done writing fractint.cfg
