The FOTD 8/28/13 "creature of the abyss" is actually a zoom in along the upper ridge of a rather unimpressive parent fractal, consisting mostly of concentric colored rings. And Muth is right - with the "numb" setting normal, only a black screen results. Other settings give some stuff, particularly the "atan", which is quite colorful and interesting - may investigate further.

After backing out a bit and centering it, varying the REAL p1 from -3 to +3 in stages yields an interesting morph, ultimately resulting in a smiling Mandelbrot dufus clown - a genuine "creature", although I do not see anything "aquatic" or "abyss" related.
