I conjectured that there might have been a problem of the text being encoded with some other standard then ASCII, say: UTF-8, etc...
I just went back to the original fractint.cfg .

For several releases now, I've had crashes on startup (Windows version) when I try to change the fractint.cfg or sstools.ini files.
Are you using a text editor to edit these files? I use Notepad with no problems.
Or, if I get to rendering point, if I ask for a new render size via Del, I get a crash; or if I try to use a short-cut key like f7 to bypass Del, it also crashes.
I can't explain this. The video interface is not as robust as it should be. (duh!)
