FOTD 08-01-02 (A Flock of Angels [8])

FOTD -- January 08, 2002 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There are angels in today's image -- four golden fractal angels hovering around the midget at the center of the scene. Four does not exactly make a flock, but a closer look will reveal four smaller angels lurking between the large ones. Eight does make a small flock, so I named the image "A Flock of Angels". The gold of the angels on the the dark blue of the celestial sky creates an image worth the rating of 8. I do not know which species of angel today's angels belong to. According to tradition, angels come in 7 varieties. Rated from highest to lowest, they are: Cherubim, Seraphim, Thrones, Dominions, Powers, Archangels, and Angels. The Jinn are up there also, though I have no idea where they fit in. Do I believe in angels of the physical, or more accurately, of the celestial kind? Well, I do not dis-believe in them. That is as far as I will commit myself on the topic, though I shall give a further hint by telling that, even at the risk of being seen as superstitious, I do not consider myself bound by the limits of common sense. After that not surprising admission, it's time to reveal that the parent fractal of today's image was created by adding Z^5.9 to Z^3.1, then adding C. Today's image is located in a cut-off feature of the parent. This cut-off feature resembles nothing as much as a cockroach. The best feature of all is the light-speed render time of the parameter file. Using the passes=b algorithm, which works with this particular image, the parameter file runs in 48 seconds on my weary machine. It will probably run faster than the speed of light on a state-of-the-art 1.5 ghz unit, if one can be found with a Fractint-friendly video card. BTW, I avoid the Fractint-Windows incompatibility by booting DOS 6.22 from a disk in the A drive when I run Fractint. If the video card supports the vesa modes, the fractals work perfectly. True, a number of Windows drivers do not get loaded when I do this, but when searching for fractals, I never need the inaccessible devices. With today's image having a render time of 48 seconds, going online is the least efficient way of viewing the scene. Some weeks (months?) ago there was a thread about running under xp. I didn't pay much attention to it as I didn't have xp running on any of my machines. Now I do, and I've got fractint running on an xp installation. If it all got figured out, fine; if not, you can contact me privately and I'll be glad to tell you what I did. I looked for fractint archives, but failed to find them. Do they exist? jerome

FOTD -- January 07, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal features a fancy midget set before a dark background, with an electric blue glow surrounding the elements. When I noticed this glow, I named the image "Ionization". It's a rather intricate image, which exists in the fractal that results when 0.05 parts of Z^(-15) are added to 5 parts of 1/Z. It's a striking image when first seen, a feature that earns it a rating of 6. And the total lack of branch-cut discontinuities raises that rating to a 7. If the render time were less than almost a half-hour, the image might even have rated an 8. The weather Sunday here at F.C. was totally miserable, especially for cats. A cold, windy rain that set in at midday continued uninterrupted all afternoon, and changed to snow at night. The snow accumulated only 1 cm before ending, but the damage had already been done, and I was left with cranky cats to deal with. Luckily, when the cats got their tuna treat, they forgot their bad moods. It's now 10am of Monday, and though I am not loaded with work, I have enough to keep me busy a couple hours. Then, if I'm lucky, I'll find time before I start the search for the next fractal to think about something enjoyable such as the latest interpreta- tion of quantum mechanics, whatever that is, (we get a couple new ones every year). FOTD -- December 29, 2001 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD image takes us once again into the bizarre world of exponents of Z between 1 and 2. This sub-two world is an unpredictable place of infinite branch cuts and midgets that become ever more difficult to find. Today's scene is located in a valley of the Z^1.8+C Mandeloid, at a level a little below ground level. (Ground level is rendered when the real(p2) parameter of the MandelbrotBC1 formula is set to 3.14159...). The exponent value of 1.8 draws fractals in which it is not too difficult to locate midgets, and the midgets can be of any shape. The midget in today's image is too small for its shape to be clearly seen, but an in-zoom will reveal an irregular lake, not quite fully resolved, with three broad bays roughly evenly spaced around its perimeter. I have named the image "The Secrets of Time". I've forgotten why. And I have rated it a slightly below average 4. These sub-two Mandeloid midgets do seem to become boringly similar after a while, though I constantly search the fractals in this range, hoping to find something unexpected. On my tired old machine, the parameter file runs in just under 10 minutes. The completed GIF image downloads from the internet in even less time. The fractal weather Friday at fractal HQ was not what the cats wanted. There was too little sun, too much wind, and too chilly a temperature. Without wind and in full sun, the temperature of 44F 6.5C would have been acceptable, but the wind and lack of sun made things just too uncomfortable for the intrepid pair. Thomas passed the afternoon under the decorated tree; Tippy chose the floor by warmest radiator. One of my favorite things about the holiday season is the great music. But as I listen to the music, I cannot help but notice that so much of it is from times long past. We all enjoy the older traditional music at this time of year, but why, I wonder, has no great music been written in recent times? Where is the 'Messiah' of the 20th century? Where is the 'Beethoven's 9th' symphony or the 'Nutcracker' ballet of the 20th century? What great grand opera has been composed since 'Turandot'? (Musical shows are not operas.) Some will argue that great music *is* still being composed, and that it is only one's particular taste that makes them prefer older music, but if this is so, why do programs of older music consistently draw the largest audiences to classical concerts? Why does older music sound harmonious and beautiful? Why does older music move us in a way nothing else can? And why does so much modern music sound discordant and even downright ugly, even to the point of annoyance? Is it because we ultra-moderns need a course in music appreciation, or is it because there is nothing in the music to appreciate? Is it because the world has cast aside the things of spirit that for so many centuries were the source of artistic inspiration? Spiritual thoughts inspire beautiful art that brings peace and contentment. Secular thoughts -- thoughts of a world without meaning -- inspire ugly despairing art -- art that expresses anger and hopelessness -- art of the kind preferred by so many of our present-day youth. Can the blind, meaningless, unknowing and uncaring physical universe of science, vast and complex as it is, ever compare with thoughts of God and angels, heaven and hell, salvation and damnation, in the ability to inspire great works of art? If the secular world cannot inspire us as the spiritual world once did, has the era of great art ended? I fear this may be the case. But there is yet a spark of hope. Both Atheists and believers enjoy fractals, which are not the highest form of art, yet somehow bridge the gap between the sacred and the profane. Where fractals may take us, I shall not speculate. Perhaps more along these lines in a day or two; perhaps not. Glancing up at the clock, I see that midnight is drawing near. FOTD -- January 06, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today, on the 6th day of the new year, we have a fractal image that rates a 6. The image illustrates a scene in the fractal that results when 3 parts of Z^(-7.7) are added to 3 parts of Z^(-1.9). I named the image "Pebbles on a beach" because of the pebbly appearance of the entire scene. The pebbles are a result of calculating the outside parts of the image with the <tdis> option. (The normal equal-escape-time bands also produce a pebbly effect.) The rating of 6 indicates that when I made the decision of how to rate the image, I saw it as a little above average. Others may see an image that rates less, or perhaps more. The parameter file is a fast one, running in under 3 minutes -- about the same time required to go online and download the completed GIF image from Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> As always, before visiting their sites, give Paul and Scott a chance to render and post the image. The fractal cats disapproved of the weather Saturday here at Fractal Central. The clouds, chilly winds, and temperature of 46F 8C made it just a bit too cold for the cats to lie on the porch in comfort. Instead, the dynamic duo spent the day by the radiators, which because of the milder outside conditions, were warm only a couple hours. A special treat of tuna kept their spirits up during the less-than-ideal afternoon. As for myself, I find that midnight is almost here, and midnight Saturday evening always means a junky old movie. Maybe it will be the original "Invaders from Mars", the movie that started the fantasy about alien implants. If I don't get implanted, I'll return in 24 hours more or less with the next FOTD. FOTD -- January 05, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Having replaced the dead fan in the Fractal computer with a workable fan from an unused machine, I once again have Fractal Central up and running. As a test of the new unit, I set the faithful 200mhz machine, which I rescued from oblivion, to the task of finding another fractal, a task which it has always accomplished admirably. After I allowed 2 hours for any potential problems to show up, the machine performed perfectly with its new fan, and coughed up today's image. The image was designed to be no more than a test, but when I saw the result, I decided that with its rating of 5, the image was good enough to be christened FOTD for January 5. The image is a scene in the Mandeloid that results when 0.3 parts of Z^(-8) are subtracted from Z^(-4) before adding 1/C. The midget in the image is located in the outskirts of a larger midget, which in turn is located some distance inland of the main bay of the grossly oversized parent. The outzoom to the parent is quite an interesting trip. Change the passes to 1 and the logmap to 0 and have a go at it. With a render time of 3 minutes, running the parameter file is almost as convenient as downloading the completed image from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> But give Paul and Scott a chance to get their sites updated before going for the image. The high temperature of 38F 3C was a bit too chilly for the cats, who spent the day watching me struggle with the fractal computer, while intermittently asking for food. It's now almost midnight, time to shut down the fractal shoppe, call it a night, and settle down to watch one of those gloriously bad old sci-fi movies from the 1950's. Maybe I'll choose "Them", the movie about the giant ants. That one is actually a bit above average, and it's much fun to doze off while watching it.
