I think I figured out what is going on here. John's messages are coming through
(to me, anyway) as UU encoded. This is a method of encoding binary files using
only letters and numbers so they can be sent via text-based email. I ran it
through an old DOS UU decoder and it came through fine. John, is there a setting
in your email program that might be doing this? I'm probably the only person
having problems because I'm using the Lotus Notes email client, which is
absolutely the worst email program in the world. Most likely, all other email
programs recognize UU encoded messages and automatically decode them.
