FOTD -- December 22, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image comes as close to true-color as is possible with only 256 colors. The iteration bands are still there, but one must look carefully indeed to see them. And no, I did not spend hours working on this illusion. It happened by accident as I was rotating the palette. I named the image "Batty for Fractals" because the dark objects in the foreground remind me of baseball bats. The generating formula is named "BackwardBrot" because instead of raising Z to the power of a number, it raises a number to the power of a power of Z. I wrote the formula many years ago, well before I started the FOTD, back in the days when I was an intrepid fractal explorer exploring alone where no one had gone before. I am still a fractal explorer, and always shall be, but as the world of fractals has become more familiar, I no longer need to be as intrepid as I once was. The sense of adventure is still there however, and as long as unseen things remain in the world of fractals, I shall seek to find them. Partly because of its illusion of true color, which might depend on the adjustment of the individual monitor, today's image rates a 6. Perhaps its best feature is its incredibly fast render time of 48 seconds, which is likely due to the fact that its magnitude is in the default range. Too bad that the holly trees blocked most of the sun from reaching the yard, where the dynamic duo spent almost two hours exploring. I fail to see how one's own yard can be so unknown that it needs to be explored, but then I am not a cat, and cats live in a different world. Now I must give the bad news that I had hoped to avoid. With the holidays so close, things are getting so hectic here at F.C. that for the next few days I will be unable to find the time for fractal exploration. As a result, today's FOTD will be the last until this coming Saturday, December 28. But I am not losing enthusiasm for fractals -- I can't imagine that happening -- I merely will not have the spare time to sit at the computer and explore. FOTD 21-12-02 (Art-Nouveau Midget [6])

FOTD -- December 21, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: December is supposed to be a month without quadratic midgets. This does not mean it is a month without near-quadratic midgets however. The midget at the center of today's image has in itself small imperfections that indicate it was generated by the formula Z^2.003+C rather than Z^2+C, so the quadratic-midget- free month continues. If yesterday's image had a bit of an art-nouveau feel about it, today's image looks like it came right out of 1898. What could I name it other than "Art-Nouveau Midget"? The image was generated by the MandelbrotBC1 formula, which calculated the parent fractal as it appears 1050 levels up the logarithmic spiral, where it is rotated 180 degrees, causing the negative X-axis split to fall on East Valley, which is now on the west side of the origin. I needed to go up 1050 levels because with the exponent so close to 2, the fractal changes very slowly as we depart from ground level. Today's arty scene is located in an area of fractured chaos at the edge of its parent's rotated East (or West) Valley, which is just starting to broaden and split. This area holds a horde of other midgets, many of which might be far better than today's. But it would take forever to track down all of them, and I have little time to spare. The image rates a 6, which is a little above average. It renders in 11 minutes, which is a little below average. And it downloads from the FOTD web sites in around one minute, which is always average. By the end of the day their moods were actually pleasant enough to bring purrs. For me, the heavy work continues uninterrupted. And I also have a number of gifts yet to find. It's looking like I may have to miss a few days' FOTD's next week, but at least tomorrow's will appear on schedule. FOTD -- December 20, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's FOTD I unpacked a formula named MytestAF. I have no idea what the name means or what the formula is supposed to do. I wrote it one day a number of years ago when I was inventing formulas (formulae for the over-educated) at random, hoping for a lucky break. But the lucky break never happened, and the formula was consigned to one of my abandoned formula files, where it has languished for 6 years or so. On Thursday, after being dead all that time, the formula was chosen at random and given one last chance. It seized the chance and created an image that, rating a 5, barely made it onto the honor roll of FOTD images. It is a busy, jittery looking image, which is why I named it "The Jitters". The foreground is filled with curved bits of brilliantly blue debris that arranges itself into yellowish angular masses as it fades into the background. This background debris is just that -- debris. When enlarged, it does nothing, and goes on apparently forever doing nothing. It lacks even the curvilinear, art-nouveau-like, feeling of the foreground. On my nearly-extinct machine the attached parameter file runs in 2-1/2 minutes. On a real 'screamer' it will run in a minute or so. Since all means of viewing the image are about equal in time spent, it is up to the individual fractalist to decide which route to take. Well, the holiday season is almost here -- the darkest time of year in the northern hemisphere, when I am most prone to wax philosophic about many things, but the shortcomings of science and technology in particular. And when I do such waxing, I usually get myself into a lively debate with those who feel that science might be threatened and needs to be defended. Luckily for members of the Fractint list, if the philosophizing starts, I will confine it to the philofractal list, where it will be on-topic for anyone who might still be there to listen. Thursday continued the cloudy, chilly, damp weather here at F.C., with a temperature barely reaching 40F 4C. Seeing such conditions, the cats were no happier than they had been the Wednesday before. As for me, I have much work to do and little time in which to do it, and the new work keeps coming in. I hope to keep the FOTD going every day through the holidays, but it is by no means certain that I will be able to do so. Tomorrow's fractal will appear on schedule however. I inadvertently left the semicolon out of the comment line of the formula in the first version. A few days ago, Tim posted a question about three-part numbers, or triternions. Shortly thereafter, Morgan posted a basic formula that draws the triternion Mandelbrot set, which, as drawn by the formula, consists of a skewed M-set with its northern part chopped off. When I ran the formula, I was expecting a somewhat different figure, but I'll take whatever the numbers give. (Maybe several varieties of three-part numbers are possible, and one of the other varieties would draw a different M-set.) Adding a few simple variable parameters to the formula, and giving it a new name, I did a little experimenting, and found that the triternion M-set behaves much like the hypercomplex set. It seems to consist of overlapping M-sets with straight 'bridges' added. Unlike the bridges in the odd planes of the Z^2+C Julibrot, which consist of stretched elements and can be unstretched into recognizable figures, the bridges in the triternion set consist of truly one-dimensional elements, which no amount of stretching will make into recognizable figures. In the triternion set, as in the hypercomplex set, different elements often overlap, and when this happens, the element with the lowest iteration count will prevail. Today's image shows triternion bridges overlapping conventional M-set elements, with a Minibrot on the left and a spiral on the right. The resulting interplay produces some interesting 3-D effects, especially around the spiral. I named the image "Super-Bridges" on a whim. Not knowing quite what to make of the image, I rated it at an average 5. FOTD -- December 18, 2002 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things have been quite busy recently here at F.C. The reason is the season. To save time, I have taken one more trip to the world of <fmod>, and found another image composed of all-inside stuff. This image looks rather like a flower, but not enough like a flower to give it a flowery name. The name I finally gave it -- Final FMOD -- is an admission that, though this recently discovered world of <fmod> inside fill might be infinitely complex, I lack the time at the present to give it the exploration necessary to find the great images that certainly lie therein. As a result, I shall make today's image the last in the present series of images. (And I'm also getting interested in that triternion formula Morgan recently posted.) The render time of today's image is once again in the 11-minute range, which is not surprising, considering that the past three images have consisted totally of inside fractal areas of the same formula, and were rendered with the periodicity turned off. Tuesday was chilly but sunny and calm here at F.C. The cats must have approved of the 36F 2C temperature, for they spent almost two hours in the yard.
