Fractal Music Project

HI, : after a long time of silence I´m back again with a new project. After my Multifractal Project which has remained unique as it still is the only software creating fractals using up to five formulas simultaneously here is my Fractal Music project, possibly the only one which deserves that name, there are some details they have in common: : It uses a single algorithm to automatically create music of theoretically indefinite size which never repeats itself. The rhythm is my own definition of an endless shifting rhythm originally inspired by Steve Reich ("Drumming") and Terry Riley ("In C") and on their side by African native music for instance by the pygmies. : The melodies- of course being the other half of the structure "shifting melodies" - are created using pixels of a Bitmap (BMP) fractal, which is scanned using the dots and lines of a freely designed IFS fractal. : The basic software - in and out and conversion of a pixel into musical parameters of a single note - originates in the nineties, author David Strohbeen and is not available anymore. : In addition to the image the music is influenced to a high degree by the IFS fractal used, a pyramid for instance creates a harder rhythmic structure, a spiral a softer melodic structure. Listening closely and relaxed you may well find that the general atmosphere of the music is that of the originating fractal. : I converted Jim´s "End of the World" image, FOTD Aug27, loved it at first glance. Thanks for that, Jim. Including links of the WAV files - mp3 is not satisfactory - and the original MID files. Be careful when using Midi: The sound depends on the fonts used and therefore maybe disapointing.The soundfont used is WeedsGM3, google for it. Use only a player that does not change the parameters. Fractint under FREEDOS from USB drive

This is just a preliminary report, but I think I have found a solution for running the DOS fractint that will work for a lot of people, and one that the Fractint team (such as it is) might be able to support. This makes it possible to run the DOS fractint on modern combuters. The hardware requirements are: 1. Bios that permits booting from a USB drive 2. Graphics with decent VESA video mode support. I bought a bunch of Sandisk Cruzer Fit 8 gb USB drives. These are physically almost too small, they are not much larger than the USB connector itself. I have seen some complaints that some software recognizes them as fixed drives and won't format them. This actually worked to my advantage, because the Award BIOS of my XP machine treated it as a hard drive and let me select the Cruzer Fit to boot from. There's a terrific free tool called rufus available here: http://rufus.akeo.ie/ that runs under Windows (in my case Windows 8.1 64 bit) and can format the USB drive to boot to DOS. I used FreeDOS, but you can use just about any DOS instead. I like using FreeDOS because the default installation seems to do what Fractint needs with extended memory etc. I will verify that this is right. Then I dumped the entire fractint distribution on the USB, with the single difference that I used a fractint.cfg generated by makecfg.exe with the VESA modes for my XP machine. When I ran Fractint, every VESA mode worked, even modes that exceeded the native resolution of my cheap secondary LCD monitor. The problems using higher resolution modes on the same computer under Windows XP vanished. On a related note, I am thinking about putting up a wiki at fractint.net/.org. We could put up instructions like this, par files, images, etc. I wouldn't want to pre-empt others that have fractal sites, but the idea is just to provide more information that would help folks use this ancient DOS program. I would like to hear from anyone else who has used a DOS-from-usb-drive environment to run Fractint. One could literally have a DOS fractint environment booting from on a machine with no hard drives. FOTD -- March 31, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows the HyperMandelbrot set run amok. The scene lies deep in the main bay of a minibrot located in a period-60 radical on the northern edge of the west branch of the valley leading to the large period-3 bud on the northern side of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set. The name "HyperMandel Amok" expresses the growing nonsense in the entire current 'hyper' theme. As is usually the case with these hyper-features inside Mandelbrot buds and minibrots, the periodicity of the scene makes no sense at all. But then what is the need of sense when the image is so striking that the art rates an 8 and the math rates a 9. In fact, I was thinking of rating the math at an apocalyptic 10, but eased the rating down a bit to leave room for possible improvement without going to an artificial rating of 11. The most annoying aspect of the image is its abysmally slow calculation time of 20 minutes, which can be bypassed by checking the finished image posted to the FOTD web sites. FOTD -- March 30, 2014 (Rating A-8,M-9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is the last in the series of hyperminibrot images. It takes us as far as we can go into the HyperMandelbrot set with the DOS Fractint program, which after 20 years or so of supreme service is now far from state of the art. A minibrot was once at this spot, but now it's gone. It leaves only its memory to carry on. (To see the minibrot, change the real(p3) parameter to zero, raise the maxiter to 8000, shut off the logmap, shrink the view-window, and wait a few minutes.) The name "Patterns in Nothing" indicates that a good part of the image lies inside an originally empty area of the now-vanished minibrot. The outer edge of the fractal ring retains the eight elements of the original minibrot, but the next ring inward has 30 elements, which is followed by a ring of 14 elements and then at the very center, a near-invisible ring of 6 elements. The series seems to cut each level in half and subtract the number one as it progresses inward. If this series continues, it would lead to a ring of only 2 elements at the next inward level, and zero elements at the level beyond that. Unfortunately the next level inward beyond the 6 is beyond resolution. One of these days, some fractal math expert, which I am not, might determine exactly what such an unlikely series means. As I see it, all the stuff in today's image might be nothing more than artifacts of math imprecision. If so, it still makes no difference, since what we have on the screen is still a fractal. The worth of the art aspect, at least in my opinion, is a very high 8. The math aspect rates an even higher 9. The calculation time of 6-3/4 minutes is slow indeed, but relief is available on the FOTD web sites. FOTD 28-03-14 (Super Hyper Ultra [A-7,M-8])

FOTD -- March 28, 2014 (Rating A-7,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To create today's image I took yesterday's image, increased the infinitesimal value of the real(p4) parameter by a factor of 100,000, and zoomed into what is left of the minibrot at the center. As today's image shows, very little is left of the minibrot. The Mandelbrot shape is still vaguely discernible around the edges of the converging arms, but the rest of the details have degenerated into hyper-chaos. The image is offset in either the real(j), imag(j), real(k) or imag(k) direction. I have no idea of which, though I know it is not offset in either the real(i) or imag(i) directions, since when this is done, the normal perturbed distortion results. The name "Super Hyper Ultra" is hyperbole. No image could possibly be so outstanding. The art rating of a 7 seems about right. The math rating of an 8 is based on the totally non-intuitive nature of the scene. The calculation time of 6-1/3 minutes will pass fast enough. This time may be cut at least in half however by visiting the web sites.
