FOTD 05-09-13 (Proximity 0.01 [A-7.5,M-7])

FOTD -- September 05, 2013 (Rating A-7.5,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The math behind today's image combines 4 parts of Z^2 with 3 parts of Z^4 and 2 parts of Z^3, then subtracts a whopping 100 parts of Z^5 before adding C on each iteration. This crazy mixture creates a parent fractal shaped somewhat like a sickle cell, with X-axis symmetry and a large main spike pointing west. This large period-2 bud on the negative X-axis appears quite normal, but the shapes of the other buds around the main bay are wildly varied. Today's scene is located in a bud on the northeast shore of the large sickle-shaped main bay of the parent. I did not try to find an additional critical point of the generating expression. The value of zero so frequently works as a critical point with this formula that I generally try it first. In today's case, zero works quite well, though I might check for other critical points and see what kind of parent fractal results. The unusual coloring effect in today's image was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'fmod' with the proximity unchanged from the default 0.01. This is what inspired the name "Proximity 0.01". With a rating of 7-1/2, the artistic value, at least in my opinion, is worth a little more than the math value, which rates a whole-number 7. The MandelbrotMix3a formula is a slow one, which slows the calculation to a turtle-like 3 minutes. So don't let the turtle win the race. Check the finished image at one of the web sites. FOTD -- September 04, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image was created with the MandelbrotMix3a formula, which mixes together various portions of four different powers of Z. In today's image, one negative part of (1/Z) is combined with straight (Z), then mixed with one part of Z^(-1.6) and one negative part of Z^(-1.4) before (1/C) is added on each iteration. The 0.2858095886402 value of the real(p5) parameter is the critical point of the iterated expression, which I determined using the tedious graphic method. The parent fractal is little more than a nest of zigzagging filaments with small Mandelbrot sets scattered about. Today's scene is located in a knot of filamentary debris near one of the small M-sets. In today's image the math value of 8 exceeds the artistic worth of 7. This unusual situation is due mostly to the unusually large number of different exponents of Z involved in the calculation. I use today's formula so rarely for two reasons. First, the images tend to become boringly similar as the number of exponents of Z grows. Second, it is too tiresome to work out a critical point by calculation or graphically. The name "Trouble in Sight" refers to the effort of finding a critical point and the marginally satisfactory result when I did. The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes borders on slowness. The slowness may be eliminated however by checking the web sites. FOTD -- September 03, 2013 (Rating A-9,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The main feature of today's image is its ultra-brilliant colors, which earned a rating of a superior 9. The math comes in at a 6, good enough, but nothing to write home about. The flower-like shapes were a result of applying the 'biomorph' option to the humdrum image that resulted when the image was generated with the outside set to the usual 'iter'. I have rarely used this option, since at least in my opinon, it is mere decoration that hides the actual fractal. The name "Chaplet of Flowers" seemed so natural that I could hardly resist giving it to the image. The parent fractal came about when I subtracted Z^(-2.8) from Z^(-1.1) before adding (1/C) on each iteration. This parent consists of little more than two oversized Mandelbrot buds without a main bay, with lots of debris strings scattered about the entire fractal. Today's image lies in one of these debris strings on the northeast outskirts of the fractal. The calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes will pass fast. It will pass even faster on the web sites. FOTD 02-09-13 (Purple Pancakes [A-7,M-6])

FOTD -- September 02, 2013 (Rating A-7,M-6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's deep toned and rather depressing fractal is a venture into one of the rogue zexpe fractals -- the one that appears when the expression Z^(epsilon)+C is iterated 9999 levels up the complex hyperladder with no function applied. The parent fractal appears as a fairly conventional zexpe fractal, with the expected two large period-2 buds. But it is rotated a bit clockwise and surrounded by much smaller minizexpe fractals disconnected from the main body. Today's scene is located in what appears to be an East Valley of the largest satellite minizexpe, which lies just south of the southwest period-2 bud of the main zexpe. I named the image "Purple Pancakes", not a very appetizing name but fully appropriate when one attempts to count all the purple blotches scattered about the scene. The art and math ratings are unexceptional, since the image's tricks have already been done many times in the past. The image is still totally new however, and well worth the 1-1/2 minutes required to rename and run this letter as a parameter file. Of course, the nuisance of running the parameter file may be avoided by checking the finished image on one of the web sites. FOTD -- September 01, 2013 (Rating A-8,M-7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a non-existent one. The expression behind today's image, Z^(0.09)+Z^(-0.09)+C, does not make a fractal. Try it and see. It merely draws a blank screen of dead inside stuff. But the Fractint program has inside fills that can make something dead come alive, and in today's image, the 'FMOD' inside fill with a proximity of 0.65 has brought a basically dead screen to a zombie like life. I have given the art aspect of the image a rating of a very honorable 8, while the math aspect comes in at a 7. I spent quite a bit of time on the impossible task of smoothing out a 256-color GIF palette. The result is moderately successful. The name "FOTD with FMOD" simply states the situation as it is. The calculation time of 6 minutes is slow however. So don't forget the web sites. Find the freedom you deserve! . The FOTD 8/28/13 "creature of the abyss" is actually a zoom in along the upper ridge of a rather unimpressive parent fractal, consisting mostly of concentric colored rings.
