FOTD -- February 27, 2013 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Since the flu shot did not work this year, we are both still feeling lethargic from the flu here at FC today, which means the discussion will be brief. I named the image "It's Fractal Time" because even after 24 years, fractals are still fun. The rating of 7-1/2 indicates my lack of real enthusiasm for the image. Today's scene is another dive into yesterday's parent fractal. Today we check very deep into the East Valley area of a minibrot on the northeast edge of the parent's prominent 'fan'. These fractal fans almost always appear with the 'handle' pointing west and the open blade to the east. They are common in fractals that combine two negative powers of Z, but rarely appear in other fractals. Due to its extreme magnitude, the calculation time of the image is a slow 9 minutes, almost all of which may be saved by checking the web sites. FOTD -- February 26, 2013 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Since both FL and I are down with a bug of some kind, today's discussion will be brief. The image is therefore left to speak for itself. The parent fractal came about when I combined 1.4 negative parts of Z^(-7.4) with 7.4 negative parts of Z^(-1.4) and added (1/C) on each iteration. Today's image is located in the northernmost part of this parent. The name "Filament Jungle" refers to the twisting filaments that infest the scene. The rating of 7-1/2 means that I put only a minor extra effort into the coloring. The calculation takes only 1-1/4 minutes, which will waste no one's precious time. And the web sites will be even faster. FOTD 24-02-13 (The Test of Time [7])

FOTD -- February 24, 2013 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The expression behind today's image combines 1.96 negative parts of Z^(2.3) with 0.98 parts of Z^(4.6), then adds C on each iteration. When written as a function, this expression has two critical points, zero and -1. (I previously had this wrong.) The MandAutoCritInZ formula automatically initializes Z to zero, but Z can be initialized to -1 by entering that value as the real(p4) parameter. For some strange reason, the minibrots in the fractal that is produced when initial Z is set to zero are quadratic M-sets, while the minibrots in the fractal with initial Z set to -1 are of order 2.3. This might be because the value of -1 is a point of inflection on the graph of the function, while the value of zero is the tip of a parabola. In both cases the derivative is zero and the fractal will therefore be undistorted. I'm not sure if this is true of all fractas created by expressions with multiple critical points. Regardless of the correctness of the math, today's image lies in the fractal that results when Z is initialized to -1. The minibrot at its center is of order 2.3 as expected. The rating of a 7 is perhaps a bit conservative. I did put a half hour or so of effort into the coloring. The calculation time of 8 minutes is slow. Much time may be saved by viewing the finished image on one or more of the FOTD web sites. FOTD -- February 22, 2013 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Slowly I Turned". The name has nothing to do with the image. It is actually a phrase from an old Abbott and Costello comedy skit. Those aged enough to be considered venerable will remember the movie. The rest must forever wonder why the phrase was so funny. Today's image is no joke however. It shows a Z^(2.3) minibrot in the phantom parent fractal of two days ago. This parent consists of a large three-lobed central bay with smaller bays on the west and east and west ends. Today's image is located in a blunt valley on the western edge of a bud on the northwest edge of the western lobe of the large central bay. The rating of 7-1/2 indicates an image just slightly above average. The calculation time of 11-1/2 minutes is very slow, making a trip to one of the web sites by far the better choice. FOTD -- February 21, 2013 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in yesterday's 'phantom' parent fractal, which was revealed by switching the value of initial Z of the Feb. 18 image to the second critical value of the generating function, which is -1. The location is near a larger minibrot in a tiny valley on the western shore line of the large western bay of today's parent. Today's parent fractal, which appeared as yesterday's FOTD, is quite unusual. It is filled with minibrots, but the minibrots are not the expected quadratic variety as they are in the other parent fractal of today's function. Instead, as is illustrated in today's image, they appear to be of an order somewhere around 2.5. Actually, today's entire parent is strange, and deserves a more careful examination, which I will do in the next few days. The rating of an 8 is divided half-and-half between mathematical interest and fractal artistic value. The name "In the Phantom" describes the location of today's scene -- in a fractal that first appeared as a buried 'phantom' fractal in the background of the image for February 18. The calculation time of 6-1/2 minutes is slow. Checking the web sites can cut the wait to seconds. In that image it is apparent that another fractal lies buried beneath the surface fractal, but because the surface fractal is critical, that hidden fractal must be forever obscured. But things are not nearly as bad as they first appear, for in today's image I take away the surface stuff and reveal that phantom fractal in its full glory, which explains the name "The Phantom Revealed". The trick lies in choosing the alternate critical value of initial Z. The generating expression actually has two critical values. In the previous image, the initial value of Z was automatically set to zero, one of the critical values. In today's image, I have reset the value of initial Z to -1, the second critical value. The result of this change is to move the previously buried fractal to the surface, and bury the fractal that was previously on the surface. Fragments of the previous surface image now appear as the bits of orangish stuff scattered about today's scene. Calculating complex critical values is not much fun. One of these days I might find a formula that can switch the critical values of initial Z automatically, but that day is not in the foreseeable future. Until then, I will continue to find the alternate critical values with the graphic method. The rating of a 7 totally reflects the mathematical value of the image. The artistic value hardly exists. But I will dive into today's image and post what I find there as tomorrow's FOTD. Who knows, I might find something worth a higher rating. . The FracTools 3.0 CD is downloadable here: http://www.fractal-animation.net/fractools.zip It is 365 MEG. It took me 40 minutes to upload with my commie-cast high-speed (LOL) connection. The FracZoom software is only 33Kb: http://www.fractal-animation.net/fraczoom.zip I have tons of old fractal software from the DOS '90's, including the original "Fractal Creations" CD for FractInt which is bound to be an immortal classic. I was living in Philly at the time and they had these computer show / flea markets a few times a year. Got lotsa good stuff then, including the complete VB6 suite for $120 ! .
