FOTD -- October 29, 2011 (Rating ??) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a double question mark. This expresses my puzzlement with the things I see on the screen. In yesterday's FOTD discussion I remarked that the image was located in a kind of phantom East Valley, which is filled with minibrots of the most extraordinary kind. In today's FOTD I show one of these weird minibrots. Judging from the 6-part pattern around the minibrot, it is of order-6. But there is nothing at all in the minibrot itself that resembles one created by an exponent of 6. In fact there is nothing at all in the shape of the minibrot that gives the slightest clue to what is going on with it. The only hint of what might be going on is the orbits of the points inside the minibrot, which for the most part are in a straight line. The generating formula simply combines portions of Z^3 and Z^4. I see nothing in the math that might create order-6 features, though the overall area is filled with smaller, purely quadratic minibrots. This would be expected however. The name "One Crazy Minibrot" expresses my feelings about the image. The calculation time of 51 seconds included in the parameter file is 1/4 of the 3-1/3 minutes the image took to calculate on the 200mhz backup machine. The day began with light rain, but by 10am the rain had changed to heavy snow, which fell through the day. At post time, about 3 inches, 7cm of slushy snow had piled up, with up to 1 foot, 30cm forecast. The temperature of 34F +1C was a bit above freezing, but the snow fell faster than it could melt. The fractal cats spent much of the day in their watch-window, watching the big floppy snowflakes come down. I spent the day readying the snow-clearing stuff, while FL gave moral support. Until then, take care, and I still do not believe that aliens from outer space are visiting earth, but now that it looks like neutrinos might be able to travel faster than light, I can no longer say with certainty that it is impossible. Deep Cubic

As I mentioned a few days ago, I am adding arbitrary precision arithmetic for formula types in Fracton. While debugging the new code, I did some exploring in the cubic mandelbrot set: z = z ^ 3 + c. I was curious to see if I could make long features using a similar approach to the line method I posted for the mandelbrot set. I was pleased to see it is possible even though the places you zoom into are a little different. As you might have guessed, the cubic mandelbrot makes 3 armed features. Instead of period doubling you get period tripling and to find minibrots you zoom into a 3 way symmetry instead of the 2 way symmetry of the Mandelbrot set. One interesting thing is that you can make curved or straight arms unlike the Mandelbrot set where I was only able to make straight arms. The higher order seems to bring things closer together so you don't have to zoom as deep to get to the next feature. The deepest image is at a magnification of about 2e62. FOTD 28-10-11 (Ring Around the Minibrot [8])

FOTD -- October 28, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is unusual enough to rate an 8. Its generating expression is (Z^3)-0.355(Z^4)+C, which creates a parent fractal consisting of a small Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees and surrounded by holes. Just beyond the main spike, which points east, lies a large butterfly-shaped hole partly filled with something resembling the East Valley of a much larger but mostly hidden Mandelbrot set. Curiously, this area of the parent is extremely sensitive to small changes in the real(p2) parameter. Today's image lies just north of the X-axis, rather deep in this phantom East Valley. The image strikes me as an unusually well-defined circular ring of pink clouds surrounding an orange minibrot, spectacular enough to rate an 8. But perhaps the most unusual feature of today's image is not in the frame at all. It is the phantom East Valley of the parent fractal in which today's image lies. The larger minibrots in this phantom valley come in all shapes and sizes, as well as in all orders from quadratic to quintic. Many of the minibrots are of a never-before seen, random variety. I might feature a few of these weird semi-critical minibrots in the FOTD's over the next week or so. The actual name I gave the image is "Ring Around the Minibrot". This name did not fit into the allotted space in the parameter file however, so I cut off the 'brot' part. The calculation time on the inactive 2000mhz machine would have been an estimated 52 seconds, quite a bargain considering the quality of the image.
