FOTD -- February 12, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is late. No excuse. I simply never felt like writing a discussion. Forget + and - Epsilon! We have moved on to + and - Pi. The Pi parent fractal is basically the same as the Epsilon, with today's scene located on the northern edge of the wedge where East Valley would be expected. The rating is another 6, and why not? The image is of average quality. Ten years or so ago, today's image might have rated a 7 or an 8, but while the world of fractals has moved on, the FOTD images have remained pretty much the same. Actually, I have had my share of 'progress'. The definition of progress is an advancement toward a goal, and I seem to have lost track of the goal. Oh well, if so many think progress is such a great thing, who am I to differ. And what would be the alternative? . . . Regression? (Maybe this would not be as bad an idea as some would have us believe.) My first idea of a name for today's image was 'Pi in the Sky' but I suspect I might have already used that name, so I named the image "Pi in the Formula". The calculation time of 6-1/2 minutes is slower than recent images, but still fast enough to avoid wasting too much time. The temperature of exactly freezing made it pleasant to enjoy the sparkle. The extra serving of tuna and cheddar made the fractal cats' eyes sparkle. My eyes sparkled this morning when I finished the snow-removal job and came inside to find FL had prepared a large mug of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream. The remaining eyes will hopefully sparkle when they see today's fractal. If not, perhaps tomorrow's fractal will do the job. For continuing sparkle, check back at this same spot in about 24 hours. FOTD -- February 11, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a further investigation into the world of Epsilon both positive and negative. I named it "Epsilon Conspiracy" because I kind of enjoy conspiracy claims, even if only to wonder how anyone could actually believe some of them. The image, a fine example of side-by-side order and chaos, is located in a star-shaped island in the Seahorse Valley area of its parent fractal. The rating of a 6 is the fourth or fifth consecutive one, but that's all I could honestly give the image. The calculation time of 1-4/5 minutes is unexpectedly fast, almost as fast as the trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> to view the finished image there. Heavy snow fell all day Wednesday here at Fractal Central, while the temperature hovered around 27F -3C. By the time the snow wound down in the evening, about 14 inches 35cm had piled up. The fractal cats looked rather puzzled at the sight of a world that had suddenly turned white, but they soon settled down by the heat. My day was rather busy, mostly with clearing the sidewalk, while FL kept busy supplying the hot coffee. Several inches still remain to be cleared away however, so I will probably start the day Thursday shoveling more snow. (A snow blower is a good idea.) The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- February 10, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The formula behind the parent fractal of today's image includes only one sign change, but that change makes a world of difference. I'll not try to describe the difference, which is better observed than described. Today's scene lies very near the negative X-axis of its parent, in an area as full of holes as a sponge. The sponge-like characteristics are quite obvious in the image. The rating of a 6 seems fair enough. I was a bit disappointed when I saw the finished product, which holds the rating down. The name "Epsilon in the Oats" makes no more sense than first appears. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is surprisingly fast for an image with so much 'inside' area. Grey skies and a temperature of freezing here at Fractal Central on Tuesday gave way to light snow at nightfall. The forecast of a blizzard on Wednesday seems a bit exaggerated, but we'll see what happens. The fractal cats never worry about what might happen tomorrow. They live in the present. FOTD -- February 09, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the same parent fractal as yesterday's, but instead of lying in the eastern wedge, it lies in the fractal debris along the negative X-axis, just beyond the main body of the parent. I named the image "Shark's Teeth". My first impression upon seeing the finished full-size image was that of an Epsilon minibrot surrounded by a neclkace of shark's teeth. The rating of a 6 seems fair. The image really has little to set it apart from so many that have gone before, and due to the work that pays, I kind of ignored the colors. One good feature is the calculation time of only a hypersonic 47 seconds, a time that will pass in a flash. This made the fractal cats so happy that they showed their pleasure by following a moving sunbeam across the floor for several hours. When the sunbeam escaped onto the wall, they decided it was time for food. My day was reasonable, but in no way does this imply I am a slave to reason. At times I can be quite unreasonable. FOTD -- February 08, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To find the parent fractal of today's image, I simply entered the number Epsilon into the three significant registers of the FinalDivideBrot formula. When the calculation finished, I found on the screen a Mandelbrot set with a divided main stem and a broad wedge where East Valley should be. Today's scene is located at the northern edge of this wedge. The name "Epsilon-Epsilon Etc." refers to the Epsilons in the calculated expression. The rating of a 6 might have been a bit higher if I had taken more time on the coloring. The calculation time of 4-1/4 minutes will leave ample time for other things. And if even 4 minutes is too slow, the finished image is available on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Total sun and a temperature of 30F -1C here at Fractal Central on Sunday, kept the fractal cats at rest. At least they were pretty quiet whenever I checked on them. My day, as well as FL's day, were non-eventful. The next FOTD, whatever it may be, will be posted in about 24 hours. FOTD 07-02-10 (Wine-Dark Fractal [6.5])

FOTD -- February 07, 2010 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to my semi-expert coloring, today's image is rather pleasant to look at, rather like a glass of fine wine. How could I not name it "Wine-Dark Fractal"? The object at the center is a minibrot of order 10.5, which explains the peculiarities, such as splitting filaments and lack of any kind of symmetry. The parent fractal is basically a Mandelbrot set with lots of added attractions scattered about. The added attractions in today's parent M-set lie along the negative spike, which, when examined closely, is found to be infinitely divided. Today's image is located near but not exactly on this shattered spike The rating of 6.5 includes a 1/2-point bonus for my semi-expert colors. The calculation time of 24 seconds will pass in a flash. Those who dislike flashes may observe the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> About 10 inches, 25cm of snow piled up overnight Friday here at Fractal Central. When the snow ended at 10am Saturday, the rest of the day was cloudy with a temperature of 28C -2C. The snow here is rather notable, but nowhere near the 30 inches or 76cm my sister reports are on the ground back at Old Fractal Central, where Thomas, the last fractal cat of Old Fractal Central, sinks in up to his middle. The new fractal cats here at New Fractal Central ignored the snow. Their biggest excitement came when a pack of starlings landed in the yard to pick up the bread crumbs FL put out. As expected, my day was spent in sidewalk clearing and little else. The next FOTD is not only due, but might actually be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and even if we do find the Higgs particle, what will be the benefit to the everyday man on the street? Then again, maybe God is a particle. Or did He merely create the particles? And if He did, who or what the heck made Him? FOTD 06-02-10 (Where is Somewhere [6])

FOTD -- February 06, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the vicinity of the northern branch of the Seahorse Valley of its parent fractal, which is a normal Mandelbrot set lying inside a circle of order (-25), with some extra stuff in its suburbs. I named the image "Lost in Somewhere" because it is not located actually inside the valley, but lies well inland near the north entrance of the valley. The rating of a 6 is rather good, but the rating might have been better if the colors had not turned out so intense and gaudy. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is brief by any standards. And the finished image may be viewed on the FOTD web site without the need to calculate. FOTD -- February 05, 2010 (Rating No) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Another very busy day kept the fractal exploration time to a minimum. But I still managed to find something in a very unusual parent, which is quite sensitive to changes in the escape radius. The name came about when the dark worm-like shapes surrounding the central minibrot reminded me of creatures called 'curl-ups' that exist only in the etchings of Escher, the mathematical artist. Unfortunately, too much math and too little art prevented me from giving the image a rating, and the rather slow calculation time of just under 8 minutes helped not a bit. The best way to view the scene for all it is worth is to see in already calculated on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Thursday turned quite pleasant here at Fractal Central, with total sunshine and a temperature of 39F +4C.
