FOTD 14-10-10 (Sparkling Waters [7])

FOTD -- October 14, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: While viewing the image that Roger posted to the list Tuesday evening, I became so interested in the curious formula that I checked to see what I might be able to do with it. Returning to the default parameters of 0,0 and magnitude of 0.67, I found today's scene in one of the vague bud valleys of the Mandel-like parent. I have never seen anything quite like the image I came up with. When rendered at a very high resolution, it almost looks like a true-color image, though the standard 640x480x256 rendering creates a rather gritty but still notable scene. The scene itself is apparently a minibrot in the East Valley area of a larger minibrot. The parent fractal however consists of only the western half of a Mandelbrot set, with no East Valley, so today's image must lie in the East Valley area of a minibrot on the filament extending from the largest bud. I named the image "Sparkling Waters". Something about it reminds me of a just-opened bottle of soda water. The rating of a 7 seems about right. The calculation time of a mere 2-1/4 minutes actually seems a bit too brief for such a detailed image, but that's the way fractals are. The image may be viewed by saving this entire letter in DOS text mode with a .par extension, copying it into your Fractint directory, and running it as you would any other parameter file. Or all this work may be avoidved by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> and viewing the finished image posted there. Near perfect though slightly chilly conditions prevailed here at Fractal Central on Wednesday, with cloudless skies and a tempera- ture of 61F 16C. The fractal cats slept in the sun to ward off the slight chill. My day was average, which is the way I like things. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 13-10-10 (The Fastest Way There [No Rating])

FOTD -- October 13, 2010 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's lightning fast image is a Julia view of yesterday's tortured Rectangular scene, which itself is a different view of the Mandelbrot image of October 10. Today's FOTD image is a near exact repeat of the October 10 image, with a circular hole at the center rather than a Mandel- oid minibrot. This is why I could give it no rating. But there is a tremendous unseen difference between the images. The Octo- ber 10 image has a magnitude of 4*(10^011), while the magnitude of today's view is 8*(10^004). The Julia aspect is 5,000,000 times as large as the Mandelbrot aspect. This size disparity is the reason the Rectangular view of yesterday, which uses parts of both the Mandelbrot and Julia views, is so tortured. To preserve the colors of the first image, I kept the same color palette, though I did add a few new highlights to hold boredom at bay. The name "The Fastest Way There" refers to the speed of today's Julia aspect, which, with its calculation time of only 20 seconds is faster than even the Mandelbrot aspect. All this time confusion may be avoided however by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The overnight showers moved out early here at Fractal Central on Tuesday, leading to a pleasant, partly cloudy afternoon with a temperature of 72F 22C. FOTD 12-10-10 (Z Squared Plus C [6])

FOTD -- October 12, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's tortured image is another aspect of the little Mandel- brot minibrot that appeared two days ago as the FOTD of October 10. That image was unmistakably a Mandelbrot-plane scene, but today's image is sliced in the Rectangular direction, which leaves little but the same colors to recognize. I wanted to do something more with the original image. My first impulse was to check the same scene in the Julia direction. The resulting circular hole was not very interesting however. So I tried the Rectangular direction, and look at what happened. To begin, the calculation time increased nearly 100 times to 45 minutes, which shows the efficiency of the type=mandel formula of Fractint. The original 2-lobed basin has been twisted and stretched to a point where it is almost painful to look at. The central minibrot is stretched into a slit so narrow that it has virtually vanished. I did tweak the colors a bit, though not enough to give myself extra points. The name "Z Squared Plus C" implies that the generating formula is the same; only the orientation has been changed. The rating of a 6 seems about right. The calculation time of 45 minutes will definitely not pass in a flash, which is why I recommend viewing the image already calculated on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Monday began well enough here at Fractal Central, with lots of sun and a temperature of 79F 26C, but at 4pm the sky clouded over and a minor thundershower moved in, dropping the tempera- ture to 64F 18C. The fractal cats took all this in stride, more concerned about food than the weather. My day was about average. Most likely tomorrow will be the same. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 11-10-10 (Hyper-Hyper Things [5])

FOTD -- October 11, 2010 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I am fully aware that today's FOTD is late. The excuse is that I got lazy. The image shows a scene on a filament extending from the north- east shore line of the large minibrot on the main stem of the Hypercomplex Mandelbrot set. I named the image "Hyper-Hyper Things" because of the strange minibrot at the center, where two Mandelbrot sets that normally coincide are beginning to separate and the two copies of the same minibrot are starting to obliterate each other -- kind of a self-destruction. The elements surrounding the minibrot are also starting to interfere and self-destruct. The rating of an everyday 5 is an admission that I put almost no effort into the image, which calculates in a speedy 37 seconds. Perfect weather continued here at Fractal Central on Sunday, with cloudless skies and a temperature of 70F 21C, which the fractal cats considered absolute perfection. My day was so peaceful that I neglected the Fractal of the Day, one of the few times this has happened. Meanwhile, FL kept busy putting her garden to sleep. (I didn't know gardens were so hard to put to sleep.) At the present time, (2:30pm Monday, Oct 11), I estimate that the next FOTD will be posted on schedule in about 9 hours. Look at the calendar- it's national 10-10-10 day! I don't know about you but I had the traditional dinner of a cheese and sauce pizza with double cranberry sauce topping. Further in the news acting on a suggestion I am now giving the parset par entries titles instead of gif file names. This is intended to make sorting through the RSS parset feeds a little easier. FOTD 10-10-10 (Lost in Hyperspace [8.5])

FOTD -- October 10, 2010 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates an 8.5, and most of this is pure serendip- ity. Returning late in the day on Saturday after an antiquing trip, I found myself pressed to find a worthwhile fractal in a hurry. After all, the date is 10-10-10, and I would never want to permit such a notable date pass without an unusual fractal. Once again, my old friend the Mandelbrot set came to the rescue. Checking the East Valley area of the large minibrot on the main stem, I found today's curious minibrot. At first the shy fellow made little impression, but as I began changing and cycling the colors, the present color palette suddenly fell into place. Ninety-percent of the coloring was done by the Fractint program, which occasionally appears to be almost conscious of the things it is doing. I needed to tweak only a few registers to create the image. The rating of an 8.5 is fully justified. The name "Lost in Hyperspace" describes the actual physical location of the scene. The calculation time of 35 seconds will waste no one's time. And as always, the finished image is avail- able for instant viewing on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> Perfect weather prevailed once again here at Fractal Central on Saturday, with conditions an exact repeat of yesterday's. The fractal cats likely spent the day sleeping, watching the leaves turn colors and checking the stray cats that wandered into view. My day was as good as could be expected; FL had a similar day. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and those who fear to delve into the mysteries must remain forever unenlightened. But always remember that one person's enlightenment is another person's superstition.
