. Well, I finally got it to work with tweax; it is one of the most interesting images I have seen, like with all the dots. However, there are no parameters to tweak so I can't do a morph animation, or as I was hoping, something that would model electricity thru a diode or something. Zooming in gets you nowhere fast; zooming out is ok for a few orders, then it STOPS at about E-005. You cant back out further - keep getting the same image. (I have seen this before. Strange) .

FOTD -- July 31, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the fractal that results when Z^3 is mixed with half as much Z^6 and straight C is added. The parent fractal resembles nothing as much as an over-decorated boomerang with a Mandeloid attached to its center. Though at first glance, the area where today's image is located would seem to be a Seahorse Valley, it actually is an East Valley, with the image located on the wrong side of the north branch of this valley. As is true of so many out-of-the-ordinary images, today's image is filled with holes. I named it "Spiral Straightness" when I was struck by the way the tight spirals suddenly resolve into eight elements with almost no spiral effect. The rating of an FOTD-average 7 indicates a continuation of the sameness that seems to be creeping into the FOTD images. But it's still an interesting image to see, even if the calculation time of 8-1/3 minutes is rather slow. Of course, the calculation may be avoided altogether by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Things were going well enough on Thursday until I waxed philo- sophical and began pondering the things that might go awry with teleportation. I imagined that the Enterprise's teleport device got stuck in an endless loop and before the error was corrected, created several copies of the same person on the planet's sur- face. This would be possible because teleport machines teleport only a field pattern and not an actual stream of individual atoms, which would probably be quantum impossible. If this duplication were to happen, the question would arise as to which teleported body, if any, held the continuation of the individual's stream of consciousness. Of course, each presum- ably conscious copy would claim to be the same person, but it is obviously impossible for the same person to be in several places at the same time. I surmised that this paradox most likely is a sign that teleportation is impossible, and booted Fractint. Lots of sun and a seasonably warm temperature of 86F 30C made Thursday a pleasant but unexceptionable day here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats yawned, stretched and went back to sleep. FOTD -- July 30, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's image "Magic Can Be Real". I have forgotten the reason, but one thing certain is that 100 years ago, fractals themselves would have been considered magic. Of course, stage magic is real enough, but all of it is based on natural laws and is not really magic in the supernatural sense. Today's magic fractal came to pass when I combined 1/2 part of Z^(5.5) with Z^(3.5) and added C. The parent fractal is shaped rather like a north-south oriented lozenge with a Mandeloid hanging from its lower end. A small oval bay lies between the lozenge and the Mandeloid. Today's image is located in the east branch of the valley separating this small bay from the lozenge. The rating of a 6 is all I could do for the image, which really could have benefited from additional work on the colors. The calculation time of 6 minutes is a bit longer than the image is worth. The temperature of 79F 26C was pleasant enough, but the clouds and occasional light rain kept a damper on outdoor activities here in the Fractal Central area on Wednesday. When Nicholas saw he would not have the basket, he leaped to the top of the secretary, where he stretched out for the afternoon. My day was spent getting the work out of the way. FOTD -- July 29, 2009 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows nothing. Take my word for it, there is nothing in the image. If you doubt this, reset the inside to 'numb' and rerun the parameter file. True, there is nothing in the image, but like in quantum physics, where a vacuum can be filled with quite a lot of something, the nothing in today's image is filled with invisible energies, and an active inside fill will make the energy of the nothing visible. The 'bof60' inside fill did the job in today's image, where nothing fills the screen. The nothing appears to be a skeletal Mandeloid, which fades into even less than nothing as it approaches its East Valley. There is a curious thin broken line extending southeast from where the East Valley of the large Mandeloid should be. This line probably holds interesting patches of nothing also, but I have not yet checked it. Since it is rather hard to give a rating to nothing, I rated the image at a question mark. The name "Nothing In Sight" describes the image perfectly. The calculation time of 4-1/2 minutes is brief enough to make running the included parameter file worth the effort, especially since nothing will be visible when the calculation is completed. Another way to see nothing is to visit the FOTD web site where the finished image is posted. FOTD -- July 28, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is more a creation of program gimmicks than a fractal discovery, but even so, the final result earns an honest and average 7. The parent fractal came about when I combined equal parts of Z^3 and Z^5 before adding straight C. It is a double-bayed thing oriented north-south and resembling a peanut. Today's image is located in a wedge-shaped bar in a double bud on the southwest shore line of the southern bay of the parent. When rendered in the normal equal-iteration manner, today's image is most boring, but when the inside is set to 'fmod' and the outside to 'tdis' the scene comes to life. Most of the effect is due to the critical setting of the 'fmod' proximity factor. The terraced effect was achieved by the outside setting of 'tdis'. The name "Terraces of Desire" is a kind of joke. It hints at the junky romance novels known in the trade as bodice rippers, which FL sometimes picks up when nothing better to read is available. (I must be sure she doesn't manage to read this discussion.) The rating of a 7 is good enough to make the calculation time of 26 seconds worth the effort. A few small showers were in the area around noon time but none fell at FC. FOTD -- July 27, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the parent fractal that results when equal parts of Z^4 and Z^6 are mixed and C is added. This parent fractal looks somewhat like a butterfly with a head on the negative X-axis shaped like a Mandelbrot bud. With thick arms converging on its mouth, this bud appears to be non-critical, but curious double-bays along the edges of these arms are filled with spider-like minibrots. Today's image shows one of these minibrots made all the better by rendering it with the inside set to 'bof61'. After all the work, I rated the image at an average 7. It's kind of fun to look at, with a bit of an art-deco feeling. I named it "Time for Thinking" for some reason that I have forgot- ten. The words probably just popped into my head. (An armchair psychologist could probably work up a complete psychoanalysis based on the names I give the FOTD's that just pop into my head.) Luckily for those with time issues, today's image calculates in only 1-1/6 minutes, about the time it takes to make a New-York style egg cream. (An egg cream consists of chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer water mixed in just the right amounts. The amounts are critical. It's kind of a chocolate ice-cream soda without the ice cream.)
