This was at 320x240. On Ubuntu 64 running xfractint 20.04.9 I completed in around 18 minutes. It would probably have been a bit faster but I kept messing around during the run. The screen size was the default of 800x600 so this is higher than Jim's 640x480. I check the Performance Monitor which running this and it was indeed using all 8 processors. Well that settles it, I will use xfractint. xfractint needs a little work but, if set up right it works. I can't seem to walk around directories without crashing so I make sure that the pars and formula I am working with are in the pars and formulas directories. The -geometry parameter doesn't seem to work and it is difficult to resize the screen and know what its going to be. I can't change maps. I can't do disk video. Sound doesn't work. Color cycling is not possible the way xfractint is written. However, it might be possible to load the gif in a seperate OpenGL application and, given the map as a parameter, be able to do the color cycle. The OpenGL application, "Antiprism", where I have done programming work can do it. Brings back memories - I'm an electronix tinkerer from way back, nothing recent though, just computers etc. "" Why attempt this ; because a better , more interesting insight might be obtained . Has anyone on this list delved into this ?"" If anyone can code the diode equation into something the fractint formula parser can understand, and make a "diode" fractal, and it loox cool enuf, I will try to animate it. It seems that many natural phenomenon, (like chemistry, my profession), can be modelled to some extent with fractals, often leading to interesting and unexpected results. stay amazed!

Fastest Fractint Setup

Hi All, I have been wondering what makes for a fast Fractint setup nowadays? I have two setups for Fractint under Vista 64. One is using DosBox. The other is xfractint running under Ubuntu 64 under VirtualBox. Both have their quirks, however each generates the various FOTD fractals correctly. They are just way slower than I'd expect them to be considering the hardware I have. What I would like for the group to do is pick one of the FOTD's which is computationally intensive. Then those who'd like to participate generate said fractal and report times with a system description. Also any tweaks or suggested improvements in system setup are welcome. Roger

FOTD -- June 30, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a puzzle. Everyone knows that Mandelbrot-type minibrots are impossible in Julia sets, so how do we explain the obvious midget M-set in today's image, the parent of which is a Julia set. To see this Julia set, reduce the magnitude to 0.5 and recalculate the image. The Seahorse-Valley Julia set that soon fills the screen is obvious. Well, two things need to be explained. To begin, the minibrot is somewhat warped. Its two period-3 buds as well as its main stem are missing. And in addition, the parent Julia set is not quite a Julia set. It is double-rotated 1/1000 of one degree from the true Julia orientation. This rotation is extremely small -- the width of one centimeter as seen from a distance of over 1/2 kilometer -- but it is enough to reveal the Mandelbrot shape of the minibrot. To see the minibrot magically turn into the Julia set of the center of the main Mandelbrot bay, change real(p1) and real(p2) to 90. Yes, 1/1000 of one degree can make this much of a difference. Other things of interest are the four partially-filled peanut holes and the breakdown of the 2,4,8... series of elements surrounding the minibrot. This breakdown is no surprise, since it often appears in warped minibrots such as the minibrot in today's image. The unusual texture of the image was achieved by rendering it with the outside set to 'summ'. I rated the image at an 8. I think it has enough interest to earn such a rating. The calculation time of just over 9 minutes is rather slow, but nothing to get excited about, especially since the image may be viewed on the FOTD web site without the need to calculate it. FOTD -- June 29, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image was rendered with the outside set to 'summ', which gives the image most of its effect. The scene lies deep in the Seahorse Valley of a minibrot lying deep in the Seahorse Valley of the large minibrot on the negative stem of the Mandelbrot set. Few words are required; the image speaks for itself. And yes, there is a much smaller minibrot at the center of the mini-Julia set at the center of the image. Anyone curious about its appearance should turn on the arbitrary math routine by entering the command <mathtolerance=0.05/0> and start diving. But don't expect to see the minibrot until this time tomorrow. The rating of an 8 might be a bit overdone. Sometimes I think the colors are a bit too intense. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is true on the P4-2000mhz machine. On the old P200 it takes 25 minutes. But calculation time becomes meaningless if the image is viewed on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> FL has a way of asking questions that demand full engagement of the thinking apparatus. While watching the rain on Sunday, she innocently asked whether I think suicidal terrorists go to heaven or hell. In our eyes they are evil murderers. There is no doubt of it. In their eyes they are heroic martyrs, doing the work of god. They have no doubt of it. Do they go to heaven for killing innocent people, or do they go to hell for doing what they sincerely believe is the will of god? And the question cannot be evaded by invoking Atheism and claiming the question is meaningless. I'll surely have more to say about this philosophical/theological puzzle in an upcoming discussion. Thick clouds and occasional light rain spoiled fractal Sunday here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats ignored the outside temperature of 75F 19C and concentrated on the indoor condi- tions, which were close to ideal. Nicholas enjoyed a bit of cheddar cheese in a puddle of half-and-half creamer. Cassie enjoyed her seafood treat. My day was close to normal. FOTD -- June 28, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's strange new view of Seahorse Valley shows the valley as it appears in perspective. The center of the image is the point at (C=-0.76+0i),(Z=-0.5+0i), which is a point of convergence of many thick filaments. I assume the large open area at the top of the frame, which has a periodicity of 2, is part of the large period-2 bud, while the open half-oval at right center is a period-17 bud on the north- east shore line of the period-2 bud. But whatever this oval area is, checking the orbits of the points in this image is very interesting, and not surprisingly, the orbits frequently take the shape of peanut holes. The effect of looking down from a mountain top onto a blue sea- shore with many long thin coves is rather striking. I tried to intensify the effect with the coloring. I also see the ghostly outlines of several volcanoes near the shore line of the large period-2 bud at the top. But who knows what these things mean? The rating of a 7 indicates that I kind of like the image. The calculation time of only 3-1/2 minutes indicates that quick satisfaction will be found by running the included parameter file. FOTD -- June 27, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows an unfamiliar aspect of Seahorse Valley. In the image, the valley complex is viewed in a direction very close to the Oblate. In fact, it is sliced in a direction rotated only 0.5 degree toward the Parabolic direction. This slight rotation means that the lower half of the image skims the chaotic east (main bay) side of the valley, while the upper half shows the more organized detail on the west side. As is the case all over the valley complex and in all orienta- tions, those little peanut-hole things are everywhere, though with such a high maxiter they are filled in. The curious loops turn into attractive spirals when viewed in the Julia direction. The rating of a 6 seems about right for an image with more mathematical interest than artistic worth. FOTD -- June 26, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things did not go according to plan at Old Fractal Central on Thursday, so I had to remain there overnight and finish the work Friday morning. When I got back to New Fractal Central at 5pm Friday, it was too late for a proper fractal search. I filled in the fractal blank with today's hasty but curious distortion of Seahorse Valley. The picture itself is not much to look at, but it calculates in a mere 15 seconds, so little time will be wasted in running the included parameter file. The question is: which part of the image is distorted -- the recognizable Seahorse Valley shape inside the narrow open slot, or the stretched-out stuff in the foreground which is covering parts of the valley? Actually, it's the Seahorse Valley shape that has been distor- ted. To return the image to its undistorted appearance, reset the magnification to 0.75, the X-Magnification Factor to 1, the Rotation Angle to zero and the Skew Angle to zero. Seahorse Valley is still in there, but it's a bit squeezed. Due to the hurried nature of the image, I gave it no rating.
