FOTD -- December 06, 2009 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's hasty image is an example of what happens when the bottom falls out of the exponent of Z. Today's exponent is 1.075, which is pretty close to being linear. But as the image shows, when the iterations pile up, close to linear is quite far from being totally linear. The parent fractal of today's image was created by the formula Z^(1.075)+C as it appears 18 levels up the logarithmic ladder when no function is applied. This fractal is little more than an oversized parabolic shaped hole with areas of chaos at its southwestern extremity. Today's image is located at the edge of this chaos. As for the image itself, there is little that can be said about it and the rings of debris that surround the tiny minibrot at the center. Due to its lack of a defined theme, it rates only a 5. The name "As Low As One Can Reach" refers to the unusually low exponent of Z. The calculation time of just over 3 minutes is a bit more than the image is worth, though it still might be worth a try just to see what a minibrot of such a low order might look like. Snow fell all day here at Fractal Central on Saturday, which gave the fractal cats a chill, but the falling flakes held just enough interest to keep them in the window that serves as their TV. The freezing temperature kept the humans on the street well wrapped however. By day's end about 2-inches, 5cm of snow had piled up. My day was troublesome. FL was moody because the weather was too bad for us to go on the antiquing trip she had planned. FOTD 05-12-09 (Three Dimensions [No Rating])

FOTD -- December 05, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a pure test. Since 3-D fractals are becoming the trendy rage, I decided to see what I could do with the type=julibrot fractals of Fractint. The image is but a slight change from the julibrot default image, so I could give it no rating. But hopefully, as I become more familiar with how this type works, I'll find some far more interesting images. Today's scene lies in the vicinity of Scepter Valley of the Mandelbrot set. I have yet to figure out the angle of the slice. I have also yet to figure out what most of the julibrot parameters do, but a bit of experimentation should shed some light on the confusion. And there are also the two "Fractal Creations" books, which I believe have sections about julibrots in them. I naturally could give no rating to an image that is a total experiment. The name "Three Dimensions" is more a wish than an accomplished fact. The calculation time of under 5 minutes is a far cry from the 2 hours or so that my old 80486 33mhz machine would take to calculate julibrots. The next FOTD is due in 24 hours, but Christmas is but three weeks away and FL has more gifts to choose. FOTD -- December 04, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A busy day here at FC on Thursday the 3rd means a brief discussion for the FOTD for Friday the 4th. The image is an admittedly two-dimensional scene in our old friend, the Mandelbrot set, the mother of all fractals. The location is rather deep in the north branch of Seahorse Valley of the large minibrot on the main stem of the even larger minibrot at -1.75 on the main stem of the Mandelbrot set. Since Mandelbrot-set scenes are so familiar, I gave the image no rating. But do not assume that the lack of a rating means the image is worthless. Go ahead, risk 8 seconds and run the included parameter file. The worst that can happen is a disap- pointing fractal. And that 'delete' key is always available. The name "In a Remote Valley" refers to the valley in which the scene is located. FOTD -- December 03, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal image continues our fascination with the 'Zexpe' family of fractals, but today we examine the fractal that lies 'Epsilon' levels up the logarithmic ladder. This fractal is a twisted thing with 2 main buds and a very large minibrot near the shoreline of the main bay. Today's image lies in a kind of East Valley in this large minibrot. I rated the image at a 6. After all, it is pretty much a repeat. But the short calculation time of 1-1/3 minutes will bring happiness to all but the most melancholy fractalists. The name "Epsilon Plus" implies more than is actually in the image. Do not be deceived! Hello, I just wanted to thank you for posting this address... I really loved it! Are you the author of the 2 pages ? What did you change to let fractals be '3d' if you let me ask - I know fractals have not a 2d or 3d dimension but I did not know how to say it...and btw that's the title/subject of the post Thanks. FOTD -- December 02, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Sometimes the irrational number 'epsilon' does strange things. When applied to the world of fractals it is not quite so strange, but as today's image shows, it still creates some interesting images. Today's image lies in the parent fractal that is created when the formula Z^(2.718...)+C is iterated at ground level and no function is applied. This fractal resembles a Mandelbrot set with its main stem pointing north and an extra cove attached to the southwest shore of its main bay. Today's scene is located in the East Valley of the main bay of this parent. The name "Epsilon Experiment" was almost automatic. The rating of a 7 might be a bit generous. The calculation time of under 3 minutes will bring no grief, but viewing the finished on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> will bring even less grief. Tuesday dawned cloudy here at Fractal Central. The clouds hung overhead all day, depressing the moods of the fractal cats, while the chilly temperature of 45F 7C helped not a bit. The cats displayed their displeasure quite vocally, and did not quiet down until an extra serving of tuna appeared. Except for the routine stuff, my day was uneventful.
