FOTD -- November 01, 2008 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's image "Ins and Outs Of It". I chose this name because the image is filled with both basins and peaks. The central minibrot is obviously a basin, but the five elements surrounding it are peaks. A collection of smaller basins and peaks is scattered about the image. The peaks have bright solid centers, while the basins have pentagonal shapes surrounding the tiny minibrots at their centers. The scene lies in the partially-filled interior of a larger minibrot that lies on a filament on the north side of the parent fractal, which on the surface resembles an overblown Mandelbrot set. I might make the larger minibrot with the active interior the FOTD for November 2. It is unusual and interesting enough to merit FOTD status. After some consideration I rated today's image at an 8-1/2, including a reward of 1/2 point for my coloring. The calcula- tion time of 47 seconds will pass faster than the time it takes a bat to fly out of you-know-where. FOTD -- October 31, 2008 (Rating Spooky) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It's Halloween, and in recognition of the event, I named today's image "Trick or Fractal". The rating of 'spooky' pretty accurately describes the hypernatural things going on in the image. The parent fractal is a grossly oversized Mandelbrot set with quadratic characteristics on the surface and quintic characteris- tics in its depths. Today's scene is located in an elephant trunk in a larger elephant trunk in the East Valley of the large midget on the main spike of the parent. The minibrot at the center of today's image is purely quintic, but the surrounding pattern is not. It has been caught in the act of changing from quadratic to quintic. Surprisingly, the resulting numerical chaos is totally free of discontinuities. The calculation time in the parameter file is 1/4 of the time it actually took to calculate the image on the old 200mhz unit. The 2000mhz unit is still out of action. Gorgeous Halloween weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Thursday, which is a bit strange, since Halloween comes on Friday. FOTD 30-10-08 (Glorious Outzoom [7.5])

FOTD -- October 30, 2008 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is an outzoom from yesterday's image. It's not exactly glorious, but I felt like exaggerating when I chose the name, so I named it "Glorious Outzoom". The rating of a 7-1/2 includes 1/2 point for my extra coloring effort. Coloring in GIF mode takes effort. It's not easy to get smooth colors with only 256 colors to choose from. The purplish spot just southwest of the minibrot at the center of today's image is the source of the break in the smooth sequence of bifurcating features surrounding the minibrot, which itself has been caught in the act of shifting from quadratic to cubic. This purplish spot is in fact yesterday's anti-minibrot image. Today's minibrot itself resembles one of order 2.718 but lacks the discontinuities that I always thought 'must' exist in such fractals. I have not yet figured out what is happening, but whatever it is, it sure is interesting. (And since the universe is a giant fractal, and keeps breaking the rules that seem so intuitive to us, why should it be surprising to see our small- scale fractals doing the same?) Since my 2000mhz fractal machine is still out of action, and will remain so until I find the time and energy to tackle it, today's image was run on the ancient but faithful 200mhz unit. On the old unit it takes 4-1/2 minutes to finish. On the ailing 2000mhz machine, it would finish in about 1-1/4 minutes. But why worry about calculation time when the completed image is or soon will be posted for instant enjoyment on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> What a minor let down! Gerald D. has informed me that yesterday's 'anti-minibrot' is actually an example of 'reverse bifurcation', which I assume is relatively rare, but not totally unknown. And a further examination of yesterday's image has shown that in this image at least, the symmetry totally vanishes beyond the stage of 2-part symmetry. (Then again, what else could it do?) In yesterday's trivial closing comment, I speculated that every- thing is an illusion, and wondered what then is having the very convincing illusion that I myself exist. Alex Dukay replied that in his opinion it is the conscious mind that creates the illusion of an individual identity. Now I wonder what is having the illusion that the conscious mind exists. (The logic seems to be going in circles here, but the flaw is hard to pin down.) Chilly temperatures around 39F 4C, mostly cloudy skies, and occasional showers of cold rain and wet snow made Wednesday less than perfect here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats agreed and wasted little time hunched on their shelf by the drafty window, watching the TV show outside. My day was about average, which still leaves some things to be desired. FOTD 29-10-08 (Anti-Minibrot [8.5])

FOTD -- October 29, 2008 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It's rare that I stumble upon something entirely new in the world of fractals, but today it appears to have happened. I named today's image "Anti-Minibrot" because that's what it is. The image is exactly the opposite of a minibrot. Instead of growing larger as the center of symmetry is approached, the iteration count grows smaller. And instead of the expected 2...4...8... sequence of symmetry as we near the center, we have an 8...4...2... sequence. The backwardness is immediately noticeable in the reverse direction of the color cycling. Instead of visualizing today's image as the expected bottomless pit of a minibrot, we must see it as a mountain peak. The rating of an 8-1/2 reflects the mathematical interest of the image and includes 1/2 point for my coloring effort. Its artistic worth alone is closer to a humdrum 5. I have not yet had a chance to open my P4-2000mhz machine dedicated to fractals to see why it will not start, so today's image was created on the P200 unit with the broken exhaust fan, which served the fractal world faithfully for over 10 years. The 4-1/2 minute calculation time on the older machine would be closer to 1-1/2 minutes on the 200mhz unit. However, calculation time is of no consequence for those who view the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Cloudy skies, cold rain with a few wet snowflakes mixed in, high winds with gusts to 50mph 80kph, and a temperature of 41F 5C allowed the fractal cats only brief periods of comfort on their TV seats in the side window. FOTD 28-10-08 (Scattered Minibrots [7])

FOTD -- October 28, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image has in it one of the most incredible assemblage of minibrots that I have yet stumbled upon. There are cubic ones, quadratic ones, some that look like disembodied cubic buds, plus quite a bit of odds and ends. And strangely enough, none of this actually exist, since the entire image consists of blank inside stuff made visible by the 'zmag' inside fill, which adds detail where none exists. I named the image "Scattered Minibrots" when I turned on the radio and heard the local forecast of scattered showers. The image rates a 7. If I had found a chance to further tweak the colors, it might have rated an 8. The calculation time of 27 minutes is not as bad as it seems, since the time is on the old P200 machine. On the usual P4-2000mhz unit it would take about 6 minutes. Thick clouds, a chilly temperature of 50F 10C and occasional light rain spoiled Monday here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats vented their dis-satisfaction by attacking and tearing up their scratching post. My day was frustrating, spoiled by a job that simply would not do what I wanted. And to make things worse, my fractal- dedicated P4-2000 mhz machine did not start up when I turned it on. It simply beeped 1-3-2, which must be some kind of coded message, and stopped trying to start. I suspect some memory might have worked loose. We'll see how it goes when I get the chance to check it. FOTD 27-10-08 (A Huge Trunk Full [7.5])

FOTD -- October 27, 2008 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image, with both Z^2 and Z^6 features, lies in the East Valley of a parent fractal that resembles a ragged Mandelbrot set. I named it "A Huge Trunk Full" because it is a scene in a trunk-spiral in a larger trunk-spiral. I rated the image a 7.5, allowing myself 1/2 point reward for the 1/2 hour I spent working on the colors. Unfortunately, the colors will not blend as smoothly on a monitor with a different color balance. Though the generating expression combines both Z^2 and Z^6 elements, there are no discontinuities in the image, such as would exist with a generating formula of something like Z^4.5. Yet with the DivideBrot5 formula, we can produce Mandeloids in all the stages of morphing between Z^2 and any other power of Z. But strange things happen when we try to morph a Z^2 Mandeloid into something with an exponent less than 2, especially including the negative exponents. This area needs much more exploration, which of course, I will be doing in the days to come. The calculation time of just under 2 minutes is as brief as a bikini. Sunday began quite foggy here at Fractal Central, but by 10am when the fog lifted, the rest of the day was near perfect. Folks, Fractint, Xfractint, and Winfract versions 20.04 patch 9 are now available on the developer's web sites: www.fractint.org and www.fractint.net What's new: Added new Fractal type DivideBrot5 by Jim Muth. This Fractal type has AP math support. Note that image skewing and inversion are not supported by the AP math routines. See Arbitrary Precision and Deep Zooming for other features not supported. FOTD -- October 26, 2008 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Pay careful attention to today's image. Even though you might think you see it on the screen, nothing actually exists. The whole thing exists only in the mind of the individual fractal viewer. Those who still believe today's image is real should change the inside from 'bof60' to 'numb'. And equally surprising is the fact that there is no parent fractal either, only another blank screen that consists totally of inside stuff. But there the image is on the screen, evasive, ephemeral, like a ghost in a ghost show. Actually, I have no idea what it is that I have captured in today's FOTD. It makes no sense at all. The main feature is a Mandelbrot bud with a main-spike appearance. But the expected large minibrot is little more than a vaporous mass of fractal ectoplasm, caught in the act of evaporating back to its natural state, whatever that may be. Yet the equally ephemeral features along the bottom of the image actually resemble distorted and shadowy East Valley elephants. And there are more buds scattered through the debris choking the lower side edges of the scene. I did a tiny bit of stretching in the horizontal direction to change the large bud from an oval to a more-natural circle. Except for the bit of tweaking I did on the colors, the rest of the image is untouched. I rated the image at an 8, which includes 1/2 point for my coloring effort. Then I named the image "A Non-Existent Bud", since that's exactly what it's a picture of. The calculation time of 2-1/3 minutes is reasonable, as is the minute or so required to go to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and view the finished image there. Rain fell in heavy squalls most all day Saturday here at Fractal Central in central Pennsylvania, but the temperature remained a relatively mild 61F 16C. The fractal cats didn't mind the rain, but they were were disappointed with the lack of sun. Due to the rain, I escaped an antiquing trip, which left me with an average day. FOTD -- October 25, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's image "Pentaheptahexabrot". The outer pentagon surrounding the central minibrot encloses an area with 7-part symmetry, while the minibrot itself has 6-part symmetry. It's an unlikely combination I know, but there it is. Images on the screen do not lie. I could also have included the 2-part symmetry that exists far out beyond the edges of the frame and led me to the scene, but none of this symmetry shows in the image. The scene lies near a larger minibrot near a larger minibrot near a still larger minibrot in the chaos on the bud side of the northern branch of Seahorse Valley of the parent fractal, which on the surface resembles an oversized but otherwise perfect Mandelbrot set. I rated the image at a 7, mostly for mathematical interest. The calculation time of over 12 minutes is admittedly slow, but full relief may be found on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> where the finished image has been or soon will be posted in GIF format for immediate gratification. Clouds moved in during mid-morning here at Fractal Central on Friday, while the temperature hovered around 54F 12C all day.
