. I love fractint! I have been using it over 10 years and still learning things about it - I knew about the orbits option but not the sound! I actually had this idea and wrote some DOS basic programs to plot orbits with sound, the idea came after I read about some group in the sixties who used vacuum tube computers and an old radio to hear the Lorenz orbits. I wrote a couple progs to plot lorenz and rossler orbits with sound. It actually is quite cool. They are old (writ around the turn of the century) and primitive, but cool. FOTD 28-07-07 (The Most Extreme [8])

FOTD -- July 28, 2007 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "The Most Extreme", and indeed it is the most extreme image I have yet posted as a FOTD. To start, the maxiter is 500-million and the logmap is over 1-1/2-million. The magnitude of over 1.7*(10^12) required the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file to prevent the calculation from flipping into arbitrary precision math, which would take about 300 hours. As it is, the calculation time is only 3-2/3 hours. And this is true on the very fast P2000 machine. On the slow old P200 it would take close to three days to finish. But even 3-2/3 hours is ridiculously slow, so I strongly recommend view- ing the image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The image is a scene very, very deep in the north branch of Seahorse Valley of the Mandelbrot set. It is so deep that I actually surprised myself when I managed to finish it. The rating of an 8 is mostly to reward myself for the extra effort. Perhaps the most unusual thing about the scene is the multitude of what I call "peanut holes", which I have colored a brilliant white so that they stand out in the otherwise dull surroundings. But don't be satisfied with my color palette. Some surprising effects can be achieved with other palettes. On this, the fractal cats agree. A fairly warm and humid day (84F 29C) here at Fractal Central on Friday was interrupted by a heavy thunder-shower in the after- noon. But when the rain moved out, the sun returned. While the rain fell, the fractal cats enjoyed it from their window. Then their thoughts turned to food. My day was a bit busier than normal, but I finished everything in good enough shape. Hello All, I have version 20.0 of fractint and it does not seem to be able to read the formulas which contain parameters p4 and p5. Can you light me? I would like so much to be able to play with these formulas of orgfrm. Gilles

FOTD -- July 27, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to our old friend the Mandelbrot set, where we examine a remote valley in the basin of the large bud on the northwest shore of the main bay. The name I gave the image, "In A High Order Valley", is a description of the location of the scene. I rated the image at a 7, mostly to reward myself for the extra work I put into the coloring. I still don't quite have the colors right, but the color palette is good enough to make today's FOTD a 7-rater. The calculation time of 3-1/3 minutes on the fast P2000 machine would be extended to about one hour on the slow P200. For some reason, the fast machine is almost 20 times as fast as the slow machine with type=mandel fractals, while it is only 5 times as fast with type=formula fractals. A warm but rather muggy day with a temperature of 82F 28C here at Fractal Central on Thursday was interrupted by a light thunder shower in the afternoon. FOTD 26-07-07 (Before or Behind [7])

FOTD -- July 26, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To create today's parent fractal I corrected the error that has plagued the FOTD images for the past two days. I changed 1.68 to 1.618. This change makes a surprisingly large difference in the appearance of the resulting fractal, which grows even larger and looses even more of its main stem, while the Elephant Valley wedge grows narrower and more chaotic. Today's image is located in an area of near total chaos in Elephant Valley. I named the image "Before or Behind" because the depth of its elements is ambiguous. Is the large chaotic area that contains the midget in front of the light blue background or is it behind that background? Its position is especially confusing when the blue background turns a bright red, then fades to black spirals, curling around and apparently now in front of the chaotic area. Actually, the question is meaningless, for no depth is involved at all. It's all done with colors. When I finished tweaking the colors, I rated the image at a 7. It might not be the grandest 7-rated image of all time, but what the h...? I decided to reward myself for the extra effort I put into the color palette. No one can complain about the calculation time of 42 seconds. Such a brief wait would make even a zero-rated image a bargain. And everyone loves a fractal with no wait at all. FOTD -- July 25, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's image we return to the same parent fractal that held yesterday's image. This fractal resulted when I mistakenly sub- tracted Z^(1.68) from Z^(1.4142) instead of subtracting the Z^(1.618), Golden Ratio which I had originally intended. This parent fractal is a very large near-Mandelbrot set, with a messed up Elephant Valley and a runt-like main positive stem. In yesterday's image we examined the inner detail of Elephant Valley; in today's image we examine the detail of the abortive main stem. What we find there is an area reminiscent of the railyard effect found in the negative X-axis area of fractals such as the one created by the formula Z^(2.003)+C. And as along that fractal's negative X-axis, today's parent fractal is chock full of midgets along its positive X-axis. Today's image shows one of these. I named the image "Why Me?". I gave it this name when I consid- ered the vanishingly small chance that this particular fractal would ever see the light of day. I rated it at a 6 because to me it seems just a tiny bit above FOTD average. If I had put more effort into the coloring, I might have raised the image to a rating of a 7, but I fear the rating of a modest 6 will remain forever fixed. One thing that will not remain forever fixed however is the calculation time. As computers get ever faster, the calculation time will shrink from its present 1-1/3 minutes on a P2000, and no one can say how brief that time may eventually come to be. But the fastest and easiest way to see the image today is to forget calculating it and view it on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Tuesday turned out average in all respects here at Fractal Central. The weather was neither unusually good nor bad, the work was neither unusually heavy nor light, the fractal cats were their typical selves, and the day's fractal is neither good nor bad. It is a routine slightly above average. I'll try again tomorrow to find a truly great image. Of course there is no guarantee of success. I don't find most of the FOTD fractals. They find me. FOTD 24-07-07 (The Golden Error [7])

FOTD -- July 24, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The first exponent of Z in today's formula was supposed to be the Golden Ratio, which is 1.618, but I mis-typed the value and entered 1.68 by mistake. No problem. The wrong exponent made a very interesting though unintended parent fractal. This parent fractal resembles a Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees, with troubles in the area of its main (positive in this case) stem and its Elephant (west in this case) Valley. I chose to search the troubled Elephant Valley for midgets. The Elephant Valley is troubled by being broadened vertically into a kind of wedge. But some rather interesting chaos lies at the corners of the wedge. It is in this chaos that I found today's scene. Today's image is unusually detailed, almost too much so. In a way it reminds me of the decorative dingbats once used in printing, or it could be a piece of Art Nouveau. But whatever it actually is, I named it after the error that brought the parent fractal into being. I named it The Golden Error". For a rating I chose a 7, which is far enough above average to justify my satisfaction with the rather brilliant coloring. The calculation time of 5-1/3 minutes on the P2000 would be stretched to about 1/2 hour on the old P200 unit. In my department, the work was light, but a good load is coming in tomorrow, so the work famine will soon turn to a feast. The fractals just keep coming at a steady pace however.
